Like a lot of people I am quite worried about the price we are going to pay to heat our homes this winter.

I looked on my energy providers website and found that the cheapest fixed rate, this was last week, was 85% higher than the variable rate I was on.

I phoned the provider and asked if there was any way they could offer me a better rate, the operator asked me to wait a minute, he came back with an offer of gas at 9.6p per KWH and electric at 35.1p per KWH, I said I wanted a fixed rate not variable, he astounded me by saying that was fixed for 12 months.

I thanked him profusely and accepted the offer, on our usage it saved me over £1600 a year in comparison to the best offer on their website at the time and represents an increase to our annual bill of "only" a 24%. Imagine being happy at a 24% increase!!

I just looked at the latest fixed rate on our providers website and now see that I'm saving £3200 against it.

So, get on the phone to your supplier, ask what they can offer you that isnt shown on their website, its saved a lot of undue "stress" on my heart.

Thanks for sharing that sound piece of advice BridBoy. I agree it's well worth a phone call to the supplier to see what's really available, especially if needing to run/charge health-related machinery on a daily basis.

Once again, our Media are sensatialising the problem. I agree that something needs to be done to keep the cost down but please speak to your provider rather than bury your head in the sand . I've started switching the news off as its all doom and gloom.

I don't think the media are "sensatialising" the problem, for a lot of folk these increases are a financial nightmare. To heat or eat I would add suicide.

I saved 5p/litre on petrol yesterday but if you go out if area you have to factor in the petrol used!

Thanks for that, will have a look. Our provider told us it was increasing the direct debit, as it would help us later in the year, even though we are in credit and have solar panels. We changed it back again.
