A bowl of ice in front of the fan helps, feet in a bucket of water, damp towel around any part of your body that you can,
My sister rubs an ice cube on her wrists and swears by it, { didn’t do a lot for me and it ended up in my feet water ! }
Take care, the sad thing is that it will pass as quick as it came.
Just arrived in Ibiza, being Scottish it's a tad warm here! Cooking I think describes it, on the plus side we have the med and Aircon to cool us down, thank goodness
In my garden at lunch time it was 104 I have not looked since
In the house it is reading 28.5 and you have guessed it I am not coping at all
I get Asthma to and like you I have 2 fans in the room another in the hallway and another in the kitchen and same going of upstairs and my garden is South facing and this house you could use it as a green house
I do not like this one bit !
What t do tonight million dollar question
Get some empty bottles put water in them , freeze them and put them in front of your fans that helps the fans to blow cooler air
You seem to have all the other things covered what you can do
My bathroom is the coolest I might sleep in the bath tonight !!!
Some say freeze your sheets but then I think well not a bad idea but then your bed will get wet when they start thawing out
I heard a really weird one today where it says lick your wrists I thought forget that and there was also eat a hot curry not to sure about that either
I hope everyone is keeping safe and look out for tips what we do tonight x
Good morning RufusScamp! I agree! I've been applying cold damp flannel on my wrists, forehead, back of my neck..but! I need to hold them, so I devised a rather primitive method this morning:Wrapped 3 ice cubes in a damp flannel and attached it around my left wrist with a rubber band! 🤣🤣🤣
I can do things, it's not falling off. 👍
Problem is it will be melting and dripping everywhere in a short while...
I hope I will survive today and wish for all the hearties here the same.
I have slept in baths before now to escape from my husband’s snoring when in hotels. Also bathroom floors. Good luck for today cos it is due to be worse. The temp in our house yesterday was 32C in spite of all my opening and shutting windows, curtains, and doors but glory be I am so lucky cos I had aircon installed in my bedroom and retreated up there.
You did make me laugh you have before because of Husbands snoring Mine snores to we had to sleep in separate rooms could not cope with the heat and him snoring as well
Hope you are doing alright it is so hot here already
Yes I am fine and feeling fortunate thank you cos have retreated to my bedroom with its aircon and am in a more comfortable 27C.We too now have separate bedrooms cos there is no way I can cope with his snoring - had to take a recording of his snores before he would believe me. I need to have uninterrupted sleep to function optimally.
You made me smile again as my Husband says he does not snore to which I reply why would I be waking you up to say you are snoring at all different hours if you were not !
My Son tells him as he can even here him when he is in a different room and we have taped him and he says that is not me
We say who is it then !
Might make different rooms permanent even after the heat wave if it works
Hello BK. I keep threatening to record my husband - it's not so much snoring as all the snorts, snuffles, pops, huffing, puffing... and then he goes quiet, and I have to prod him to make sure he's still breathing!
Thanks I don't have a thermometer in the house, but it was 100f in his car yesterday morning, so probably higher today. I've just got a new phone, so I can probably make a recording on it...
Sorry about this reply chaps so maybe you should not read it. Don’t want to cause offence and be banned! I am whispering this very quietly so cover your ears.
I find with my husband he is sometimes like a small child standing there with jam all over their face saying ‘it was not me I did not do it’. Stout denial can a great general principle!
On a totally different scale it is one in which Putin devoutly believes too.
I find with my Husband nothing is ever his fault I often ask what is it like to be so perfect x
• in reply to
Funny story , I got up today and there is marks all over the kitchen wall beside the bin , like a spray of something, so I asked the husband’ Kevin’s what’s that on the wall beside the bin did you drop something?’ Him . ‘ no what do you mean ?? He looks at it and says ohhhh well I’m due to paint it anyway’ …… wtf!! Men
• in reply to
That sounds a typical reply from one
Think we could do with support Community how to cope with men x
Yep, it's always my fault. I sprayed toothpaste all over the bathroom, I drank all the milk, I didn't flush the loo. It was even my fault when his room door jammed because some of his junk fell off the shelf and stuck under the door
Same here. He has sleep apnoea and is also like a hot water bottle so separate rooms are a must. He doesn't feel the heat at all. 10pm now and living room is still 32c; even hotter upstairs. I had a tall fan blowing on me all last night, a cold hot water bottle in bed and two floor level fans onthe dog. I almost pinched her cool mat
MIne's sitting in his little room with a fan moving the hot air around; refuses to open the window now it is cooler and yes he had a duvet and throw on the bed too. Unbelievable. Just let the dog out and got goosebumps. Wish the house would cool down now. I am going to get an extra dog cool mat to put under my sheet. They really work...
I had leftover Chinese curry for dinner tbh it wasn’t hot hot and I didn’t eat much , the sheets in the freezer and then on the bed is bonkers , I’m knackered changing a bed so it’s just giving me more work 😂😂 Seems both our houses are the same apart from my bathroom is at the back of the house so it’s like a kiln in there right now . I’ve just went to bed , one leg under the duvet, fan on at 2 , other fan attached to headboard on at one . And the cat wanting a cuddle!! Beat it 😂😂🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛ . Stay cool 😎
It’s lovely today in Ayrshire Scotland, windy sunny and a lot cooler , I have all the windows and doors open to plunge out the upstairs area and downstairs before the sun comes around to the south side and burns us all again .
You certainly started a brilliant thread there. Thanks again for the good advice.
Take care. Jan xxx
Camp out in the living room downstairs, that’s what I’m doing with the kids, bit cooler down stairs in our house, upstairs is horrific. But all depends on your house I guess. And feels like a slumber party.
Think I am lucky we still have two sperate rooms downstairs. In the morning the lounge gets the sun, so draw the curtains and use the dining room, that gets the sun in the afternoon, so we draw the curtain in there then and move into the front. Have had my feet in a bowl of cold water too. Should be having a haircut tomorrow at 3pm 4 miles away, not sure if I still want to go.
Same here; two rooms. Unfortunately my computer's in the one that gets full sun after 6pm and the TV. Despite toothache I turned down an emergency dental appointment for today. Going tomorrow instead. I couldn't even thin about getting into a car today.
Watered the garden ( mostly watering can rather than hose), greenhouse and allotment from 6.30 this morning, had to do the greenhouse again at lunchtime and just done again.
After then it was closed curtains (like the neighbours) I ventured out of the front door when we had the Asda delivery at 1.15 and it was like a furnace outside.
To be honest and surprised, thought it would be a lot worse on me than it has, I put that down to three personal reasons - I have never liked it hot anyway, do take more precautions now (no formal exercise since Saturday, and hope to start again on Wednesday), and my meds are working really well.
Hope you all get a good nights rest where ever you are.
I found my cucumber plants on the conservatory window sill c ompletely limp at 10am despite watering them very late last night. Tangled round the blind cords it was too hot to stay here and untangle them. Had to do it in bits. The one ripe cucumber was cooked. They seem to have recovered.
What a lovely photo. It's such a shame that animals can't take their fur coats off this weather!! I think its going to be much cooler tomorrow! Take care. Jan xxxxx
I have a husband who "doesn't believe in fans'!!! I'm in another room with my neck fan, icy bottles and frozen tea towel!!!Look after yourself - as it's going to be around 20 degrees lower tomorrow, I'm getting ready to put the central heating on!!
My girl hasn't had a walk since Friday but she doesn't w ant to move. Thank goodness I bought her a new cool mat. She's a very heavily coated breed. Her coat is insulation but she's struggled in this heat.
She's a beautiful girl. I'm sure she loved the cool mat but at least it's not quite so hot today!! This heat certainly takes some getting used to but I don't think I'll ever get used to it!!!!! Lots of love and hugs to you both. Jan xxxx
Thanks; she got her first walk this morning since Friday. Yes temp has dropped. It's 19 outside but house is still so hot.I woke dripping even with window wide open and fan on me all night
Hello Qualipop. So glad your lovely girl got her walk today. Our house just won't cool down either. It's still 30 in the bedrooms and 28 downstairs!!! All the windows are open!!
We were hoping we'd have thunderstorms today but no such luck. The sun has decided to come out and it's baking hot again!!!
Thankfully as the day's gone on it's got cooler and cooler. I might sleep tonight. Even the window wide open and a strong fan directly on to me didn't help last night. My dog wouldn't even go upstairs to bed. The s un's now hidden behind cloud and the breeze through the window is actually cold. JUst need some steady rain now for the garden.
I thought it was meant to be a tad cooler at night ! I’m hotter now than I was in the day time . Fan on full blast . Feet hot and swollen . Asthma not great . I’ve been trying to persuade my friend who is a cancer patient to not go walking to B&Q tomorrow but I know she won’t pay any heed to my advice . So be it!
My neighbour told me that we’re going to have 3 weeks of this weather in August. Hope not
But keep all of your windows, doors and curtains closed to keep the cool in and the heat out. It is hotter outside so opening the windows will make it worse.
Totally agree with this. I have all the windows open at night when it's coolest and as soon as I get up, before the outside temperature starts to rise, I close all the windows and curtains.
In the sun you can reach all sorts of temperatures. The only accurate reading is when in a stevensons screen and away from radiation from buildings and free air movement. MAX yesterday was 40.3C
The thermometer was in the shade well out of the sun and facing away from it. The thermometer itself may not be accurate of course. How do They know what each individual temperature in every place is? They cannot. They are only going by what their weather stations say at a certain number of spots.
40.3c record- unbelievable. I experienced 41c but that was Death Valley in the USA where literally everyone has air conditioning, I hoep you coped and teh fires were nowhere near you.
I have been told to put your fan in the window at night?! Haven't tried it yet but several friends say it works🤷🏽♀️ Wishing you and everyone well in this heat 🤞🏽
I sleep with a fan every night even in the winter it’s always on . Hubby opened the windows this morning and is currently closing us all in right now , fans are on everywhere ☄️☄️
I don’t cope at all. Had a couple of heat related scares last week (we were away so it was more difficult to keep out of the sun). We invested in some portable air con units last year in the sales and they have been a game changer.
Hello I get sealable freezer bags and lay flat inside a soaking wet flannel then freeze flat. I find they are great for cooling down. I keep them in the bag to use and just re freeze. Last night I put one under my pillow. Also I look like I'm taking part in a Miss Wet Teeshirt competition as I soak my top......50 years ago I could have sold pictures now it would be for the scary value of them 😅
Have my blinds down, my curtains, windows and doors closed, have managed to keep the indoor temperature to 25 degrees, still flipping hot though here in Devon 😎 hope every one stays safe, thinking of all hearties x x
TBH I’m finding this hideous and can’t wait for temperatures to drop - I don’t holiday abroad to hit countries as can’t cope with heat - give me cold any day !
Me too! In my opinion holidays in hot countries are pure lunacy nowadays! That activity belongs to the 70s , 80s !I doubt we'll see snow as the winters will be short, wet and stormy. 😳Unfortunately the temperatures that are so debilitating this summer will be wished for and remembered as bearable, even pleasant in very near future.🤔😫
I'm 72, wonder how long will I endure it for? But feel so sorry for my daughter in her 40s and grandkids!😢
This really is the coldest summer for the rest of our lives!
I'm quoting someone, can't remember who it was or where I read it, my brain is slightly fried today.🤪🤯
Im in Cardiff. Ive just dropped the kids to school and the car says 29.5c (so far) Im ginger and this is not a good time for us. I should be hiding behind the sofa. I can feel myself going crispy.I have a poorly puppy also who is struggling 🐶
Do you have a cool mat fort the puppy? That or at least a cold wet towel to lie on. My dog hasn't been off her cool mat for days. She had her first walk today since last Friday.
Well I don't want to brag but I live in Oregon USA, n we have not had hot horrible days like last year. The hottest in maybe 89 degrees I haven't even turned on my ac, three times, I keep one fan on low. And at night it gets freezing cold. My son came from AZ to visit and he was freezing cold but to me it was warm, it was 72 degrees. Here in Oregon we get maybe two months of summer, maybe two weeks of hot. Come over here u can stay with me..
Not a big place but hey, my son came to visit I have an inflatable air cushion n live right across the river, and a green huge park. Oregon doesn't get that hot if it does it's for a day or two.
Isn’t 21C a bit low? Too much of a contrast when you go to the kitchen say. I get the temp down by turbo to start with and then keep it going at about 26C because I can live with that.
We've got a long and narrow landing window! Had a brainwave yesterday and blue tacked bacofoil on it to reflect the heat back out!! Strangely it worked!Good luck today. I'm just looking forward to tomorrow!!! All the very best. Jan xx
It's only meant to hit 36⁰ today, I'll confess to buying a portable air con unit, so me and the 3 dogs are shut away in the darkened living room, tis about 23⁰ in there, we've got a South facing garden, with a tall hedge all the way round, so it's a massive suntrap, we've also got a really old conservatory with a polycarbonate roof, so that's like a green house at the moment (perfect in the winter as on a sunny winter's day it heats the whole of the downstairs, not so good this time of year), the bedrooms have all got ceiling fans, which are fab at night x Other than that, I've got no other suggestions, except for doing as little as possible x
29c already in lounge. Don't dare go outside. Very little sleep last night. One fan on floor pointing at dog and tall fan blowing over the bed onto me all night. Got about 3 hours. Forehead dripping; feel ill. Even internet went off.
Lousy. At least today is cooler so with any luck you will feel better today. Our internet has been dreadful for ages. Talktalk and BT were blaming each other. Hopefully sorted now. I feel sort of lost now with no internet or even without my mobile phone. Isn’t that silly when you consider that I spent most of my life before their invention?
I rely on mine for shopping as I'm housebound but it was off this morning; no lights on the router and went off yesterday. I blamed the heat and router overheating but it's only 19c today.
I have heard that a huge bowl of ice placed in front of fan helps some....there are also you tube videos for making "air conditioners" with foam coolers, ice and fan. It is in 90s here in Pennsylvania, US... but so far we are using fans at night...bring in cool air, shutting windows in the worst part of day....
Well night of day 1 was difficult but once again can't say it was any worse than when I was well.
Today the heat has certainly notched up to 11. managed the greenhouse this morning but no way was there going to be a walk to the allotment.
Very little energy today, even found it hard to read any length of time, (no problems with the heart which I know of though as I have said before really hot weather has never agreed with me).
Hopefully it's on the turn now expecting a cooler night and getting back to normal tomorrow.
I was a bit jealous when I heard they had rain in Taunton this morning that held the cricket up.
Glad I coped with the experience as I am afraid I don't expect this will be a one off.
If you can put your feet in a bowl of cool water it will help as I believe we have 24 pulse points in our feet and these can transport the cool blood up elsewhere and especially to the heart. Also we have "chilly towels" from Amazon and you soak them in cold water and put them on your head, ankles or wherever you wish and it bring your body heat and temperature down.
Our forecast said it's supposed to drop to 18 or 19 from 10pm tonight. NO sign of it yet although outside is c ooler than inside. Leaving window open last night was a mistake. Neighbour has a new car that beeps very loudly when he reverses the full length of our garden, house, front garden and road long before my alarm goes off. Sounds like a bus reversing. We may have words before long to see if he can turn it off.
