Dear RevRog

Hello and welcome to your first post on the forum, I hope that you find it as helpful as I have done.

So sorry I am not medically trained so I cannot answer your question about your partners procedure, but if its any consolations { very small sorry } there was a few patients with the same thing when I was in at Southampton.

I think that it helps the heart pump blood more efficiently until the heart bypass can be done.

Southampton hospital is one of the top renowned heart specialist hospitals and I was looked after extremely well.

They do have a guest house that you can stay in { sorry I don’t know how it works as I am local to the hospital so my loved ones didn’t need it}

Please let us know how it all goes and make sure you look after yourself as well { if you are the partner, if not pass this line on } as it affects our loved ones as well.

Take care, regards to all on the wards

Hello Lesley and Roger

I think that Southampton is still in ward lockdown { or it was the other week } he is in a good place {sorry he has to be there at all } but I hope that you also have support as it is hard on the loved ones.

I wish both of you all the best, if you need to know about the pump and ballon procedure, if you contact the ward the staff nurse will tell you all about it {and they will be happy to do so }

Please take care you are both in my thoughts.

Just been through this when my husband was awaiting bypass. His was quadruple and he is only 43. He was at a hospital 35 miles away. And I was not alowed to visit. Just drop off stuff. On top of all he had covid, which they said precipitated the heart attack. I am telling you my story so that you know that we are with you. We understand how you must be feeling. And yes do take care of yourself. I found that I was doing the minimum to be able to be there and support him.

Drop us posts if you need to chat.

And also you can WhatsApp your husband. Video call. WiFi in hospital is free. It is not the same as visiting but video calling my husband helped me.

So sorry to hear what a difficult time for you and your wife, I didn’t want to read and run, I don’t have any advice or information to offer other than wish you both the very best and your wife gets the care and help she needs. Take care.

Thanks im lesley the wife & it was me who posted sorry that wasnt clear 😅 Thanks for replying

Hello :-)

I am so sorry to hear that there are no visitors allowed at the moment

For family this is a very worrying time and normal and not been able to see your loved one's does not help at all plus when you can visit you can ask to speak to the Consultant to try and get more information that you need when you can't you feel left with all these questions and no one to ask

But he really is in good hands and he is in the right place and they do work miracles with the skills they have :-)

I had a triple Bypass and it is not as bad as it sounds and if that is what is needed then it will give him a new lease of life very soon :-)

You could ask either your Husband to ask or phone the ward and ask if you can speak with his Consultant as his next to kin as you have questions you would like answering

Write down those questions and any concerns so you are prepared

Let us know how you get on and it would be lovely to know how your Husband is especially after his operation

Easy for anyone else to say but try not to worry tell yourself he is in safe hands and will soon be home with you :-) x

Sorry to hear what you are both going through.

My fiancé was under the care of Southampton hospital when he had his bypass (he actually had it done at the Spire private hospital across the road - but on the NHS.) All his initial appointments were at Southampton General though and all of the staff there were fantastic.

I stayed at Heartbeat House, which is for families of heart patients and is right next to the hospital. (You can find there details online and it’s an amazing place if your not local to Southampton.)

Hope you get to see your husband. Take care.

Hello Lesley and welcome to the forum. Sorry to read of the troubles you are having. I had a balloon pump for a couple of days post complicated and prolonged surgery - its to support the heart and help it to pump more efficiently. It goes in through the femoral artery in the leg (at least mine did) and sits in the aorta. Its not at all uncomfortable, the difficulty is having to lie still with your leg stretched out in front of you. No getting up or bending your leg. I have to say I was pretty groggy but I do remember being asked not to move my leg and it took ages to come out and left a horrible bruise. But all things considered, what a wonderful piece of 'kit' to enable support like that controlled by a computer! For him, he is in the right place - and well looked after. Others have said how much they rated Southampton. He will have excellent care and there will be other patients around him. Its you, on the 'outside' left to worry about him. I'm glad that you can pop in and see him for a few minutes - which will set your mind at rest.....but tough couple of days coming up for you.Please let us know how you both get on over the next few days.

Hello

Just to say it is standard procedure if it can't be fixed in Bournemouth then Southampton is the alternative. The couple of times I have been in Bournemouth I have seen patients transferred to Southampton for surgery. I am at Bournemouth this month for Angiogram and some larger stents into an already bypassed LAD. So I do believe we are lucky to live in this area with good Heart teams in both Hospitals.

Best Regards
