RAMAPRIL

My wife has been prescribed Ramipril after she had a really bad cold so bad she ended up coughing blood. The doctor asked for bloods and noticed her blood pressure was really high so told her to take one2.5mg tablet for two weeks then 2 2.5mg tablets for two weeks. Her blood pressure has come down but she wasn't given anymore tablets so she contacted the doctor and he has prescribed her with 5mg tablets. But she is unsure whether they can be taken as one or if they can be split so taken twice a day. I know they could be capsules which would make it awkward. What should she do ?

Any instruction on how to take any medication will be on the printed label, attached to the outside of the box by the pharmacy. eg, "one to be taken daily"Or "take half a tablet TWO times a day"

I'm sure 5mg ramipril is a capsule

If in any doubt at all, talk to your Dr or pharmacist

Hi Sizzlerman. Ramapril comes in 1.25, 2.5 and 5mg. You take them as one dose so taking the one 5mg tablet per day as prescribed (and as detailed how to take, on the box) is no different to taking 2 x 2.5mg. Some drs advise you split them if you are told to reduce the dosage but speak to the gp or surgery nurse if need some reassurance. Good luck 🤞

Hi sizzlerman. have been titrated up to 10mg of ramipril a day taken as 2 5mg capsules. My pills have always been capsules, so would be impossible to split. As Griff-64 suggests - clarify with your pharmacist or GP for peace of mind. Best wishes to your wife x

I assume she's doing daily BP checks and sending the results to the GP and that she feels ok on the higher dose. I Only ask because my mother in law went to the GP who found a high BP reading and put her on tablets immediately which she just stayed on until years later, she started fainting, was taken into hospital who discovered she didn't have high BP at all and probably never had. The GP should have taken at least a week's worth of readings, 3 times a day before putting her on medication. My BP is always sky high when I go to the surgery. It's called white coat syndrome.

I'm taking 10mg Ramipril capsules once a day though they can be taken twice a day. So 5mg once a day appears to be quite a low dose. It is normal to have a blood test about one month after starting on Ramipril.
