3.

18 (it’s that or my original answer, 20, but I keep wavering between the two because I can’t draw on it to make sure I don’t double count unless I print it out! 🙈)

I'm with Lezzers at 4. The others aren't triangles? Will be interested to see the result!

Just found another so 5 is the answer.

Israndomness profile image
Israndomness

18 in all. The way I calculated it was to look at it as a building with three levels (ground, first, second). In short, at each level there are six triangles:

i) 3x single slim 'pizza slices' (left; centre; right)

ii) 2x larger, combined 'pizza slices' (left + centre; centre + right)

iii) 1x largest combined 'pizza slice' = (left + centre + right)

Repeat this for each level and you get 3x6 = 18

Setting myself up for a big fall...but that's my answer and my working out!

And the long awaited answer is 18. Israndomness gives a good explanation. Thank you to all those who had a go.

The answer 18 sounds quite an intelligent answer, but I would argue the question is more open - is it referring just to the diagram? or the lines in the diagram? Or includes the script of the question? Or just how many triangles? My answer is infinite, though you could argue that the truth is greater than infinite... some triangles are parallel lines that meet at infinite, some of the lines in the diagram are inverse triangles (lines that go further away from each other but still meet at the point of infinite, or would look like triangles if you could see them from the point of infinite, which of course, by definition, you can't). Also, can each triangle be counted three times, because there are three ways of looking at it (with one length A, B or C at the bottom, eg 18x3), or are there infinite angles that each triangle can be placed at? If each angle counts as a different triangle, my answer is infinite squared. 54 is a strong answer for the diagram though, or 108 if you are able to see it from the other side too. The question does not mention how many different triangles, just how many triangles.

I encountered Schrödinger's cat when I read Physics decades ago. This seems like an attempt to create Schrödinger's triangle! Has your device a screen on the back?

bbhbbh profile image
bbhbbh in reply to MichaelJH

Without wanting to be divisive 😜, I don't have a device with a screen on the back, but I do have an imagination.

Regarding Schrödinger's cat/triangle, I think your thought that the two are related is closer to Schrödinger's cat concept - after all he died in 1961, but would have to be alive to enter this conversation. Or perhaps in a parallel universe (not necessarily the Deutsch–Schrödinger version) he did invent the Schrödinger's triangle.

The cat theory is pertinent to this site, as (I imagine) a lot of people have had a near-death experience and may wonder, what if...

For me the whole HA experience was quite surreal and abstract, but there is no question - I am alive (and glad to be).

As I can see the image on at different times there are 18 x infinity triangles in time. So are these Pointless answers?

bbhbbh profile image
bbhbbh in reply to Heythrop51

Excellent point, I will extend my answer to infinite to the power of three - quite a triangulation (you can multiply it by 18, or 3, or 54, but infinite remains the same).

Hi MichealYour triangle appeared on the 1% Club, TV last night. It was the final question and they both got it wrong. I was so chuffed I knew it, even by default.

Thanks Gill
