Hip surgery

I had a double bypass last May and have recovered very well. I now need a hip replacement and this will be a revision of the first one so a much longer, bigger operation.

At age 70 have been told that due to the bypass last year I am at a much higher risk of something going seriously wrong. Am really scared....I need the surgery as I now have a leg length discrepancy and need to walk with a cane. Difficult to walk or to excercise and feel that at this point I have no real quality of life. I do need this surgery.

Has anyone here been in this position or perhaps know of someone who has and have had a good result?

Thank you for reading 🙂

What is the reasoning behind the increased risk?

Because of the double bypass. The revision will take approx 4/5 hoursThank you for replying

The whole reason of getting a bypass is to fix something that is wrong. If the bypass was a success then you are fixed? Did you have a bad reaction to the anaesthetic or something?

No I didn't. Everything went very well and I recovered quickly and have never looked back. I am of normal weight and don't smoke and only have the occasional glass of red wine

What kind of 'going seriously wrong' have the hospital threatened? You ned more information in order to perhaps discuss it with other medics for a second opinion or even to come to some informed decision yourself.

The risk of heart attack, stroke or death increases 4 x due to my having the bypass. This is what the hip surgeon has told me.Thank you for replying

All surgery procedures come with a risk, and hip replacements and revisions, because they are quite traumatic, are riskier than many procedures. My wife has had both hips replaced and a revision to one and the decision to proceed in each case was difficult, even though she was and still is in general good health. Your situation is less clear given your heart problems, and only you can balance the deteriorating condition of your hip against any heart related risks during and immediately after surgery. That said prior to surgery your surgeon or surgeon's representative will advise you of everything and anything that might happen to fully inform you of the risks, but also in an attempt to prevent any litigation should the worst happen, and what you have been told may just be a part of that process. But be assured, from my understanding of people I know who have had hip replacements, that the long term outcomes are very favourable indeed and well worth going through what the procedure and recovery involves.

Thank you for your reply I realise the surgeon has to tell you everything even the worst case scenario. I know the ultimate decision is mine but I'm scared of making the wrong decision as much as I'm scared of having the operation.

I understand no one can really allay my fears but when I was going for the double bypass I didn't feel any fear or worry about an unfavourable outcome. Yet terrified to have this surgery.... I don't make sense to myself!

Am seeing the surgeon tomorrow and can only discuss things again with him.

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply.

I don't understand why you've been told this and hope you can get a better explanation tomorrow - I understood that a bypass sorts the problem out, you've made a good recovery , they're not making incisions around the chest...I'd ring BHF also and ask for their comments. Best wishes for tomorrow.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I think it's a very good idea to ring BHF.....think I've been so anxious about this surgery that I'm not thinking straight. They're obviously the right people to ask. I shall do that.
