Avoid abbreviations so newbies can follow along

My first post! The abbreviations in posts leave me perplexed and I end up not reading to the end.

I know, and appreciate that we have valuable, knowledgeable members within this forum, but spare a thought for those, like me, that haven’t a clue!!

May I add one abbreviation that is most relevant to me?

SCAD - Sudden Coronary Artery Dissection

(Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is when a tear appears in the wall of a coronary artery, which supplies blood to your heart. In some cases this can lead to a heart attack)

Thanks.

Welcome! And I agree 👍By the time I've looked it up and understand what it is, I can't remember what post I was even looking at 🤔

If you look at the Pinned messages on the main screen, you will see a post that lists most abbreviations.

Hello :-)

Not long ago there was a similar post asking the same

It was pointed out that there is a pinned post that gave the answers to the abbreviations and even though I would not say I am a newbie I had never realised

Having said that I must be honest I still find the abbreviations frustrating and sometimes I just don't answer as it is so time consuming looking them up maybe wrong of me to not have the time to look them up but how it is for me

I also wonder if some posts that contain them would get more replies if they did not use them as others might feel the same

But I suppose each to their own some will like using them and some will find them quite frustrating

I have to ask the experts when they are using all these terms if they could just say it in plain English which I can understand :-) x

I quite agree. Why people don't use the full name the first time and then abbreviate it from then on........

Hello JayBirds,

Welcome to the forum.

I totally agree and I try not to use abbreviations myself.

I live with another possible cause of a Myocardial infarction non obstructive coronary arteries MINOCA, vasospastic angina.

Vasospastic angina along with microvascular dysfunction are types of non obstructive coronary artery disease NOCAD.

There are common themes between SCAD and NOCAD. Both tend to effect women more often.

The conditions can be often under recognised and overlooked.

There is a very good support group Beat SCAD.

JoanyB is a forum member who has a lived experience of Spontaneous coronary artery dissection, SCAD. Hopefully she will be along soon, to share her experiences with you.

We don't pay by the word, there's no need for excessive abbreviations. If a post is full of them I just skip past it. If someone can't be bothered to type what they mean, I can't be bothered to read it 😅

Agree. Having to keep stopping reading to look up an acronym or abbreviation. Irritating.

I don’t mind abbreviations. It must be annoying to have to type the full title when an abbreviation will do. Admittedly we don’t always know what they mean but I just google the abbreviation with heart and I usually get the answer. It also explains what it is when a few long words don’t. I for example had svt. Anyone who doesn’t know what svt is probably wouldn’t know what supra ventricular tachycardia is either without asking google. I see it as a learning process.

Thank you, I totally agree 😁. I sometimes feel like I’m watching “Line of Duty” (for those who know the tv programme!)😂

Thanks JayBirds tried to like what you said but it kept saying unliked!I’m like you some of the abbreviations make me give up reading a post.

Very informative group and helpful info but we don’t all know what certain letters mean.

I agree also. Whenever I see the abbreviation CABG all I see is a row of cabbages. (Apologies to anyone who has had a coronary artery bypass graft as it sounds scary.)

Hi JayBirds,Welcome to the forum.

I'm a newbie myself and l agree with you !

Having said that, you will find that in any club or gathering there are people who use jargon and/or tags so as to be "with it" ! Sorry if this offends but it is a habit that has formed since the First World War !

I find some of the names for medical complaints tongue tying , initials are easy ! (Look at any young persons texts to demonstrate what l mean.).

Is there anyone out there who is willing to make list of all the initials used and their meanings ? This can then be printed off or saved with a screenshot.

Us newbies will then feel more able to join in. 😍

Pringleboy,

Timontrak has given the link for the list of the abbreviations and meanings just a couple of posts before yours.

Thanks, but it is the constant to and frowning from the link that is the hassle!

You could also ask the original poster to write out in full any abbreviations they use.

I do 😉

Welcome and many thanks Jaybirds -- I couldn't agree more with your comments on abbreviations and thanks to you and some of your responses I've now spotted the abbreviations and acronyms button. Hurrah

Yes I agree, I ignore most of the acronyms as they annoy me, I can usually get the gist. I sat on the board of a housing association for 9 years and acronyms drove me mad, I think I pulled people up at almost every meeting, it seemed to take ages to get others to do the correct thing and put the whole word first time with acronyms afterwards
