First few days after Aortic Valve Replacement

I'm new here. Had my Aortic Valve and rising aorta replaced a week ago and was discharged last Thursday. Can anyone help me understand when the rehab team may be in touch as they didn't contact me before discharge (maybe because I had a small stroke after the OP and was discharged from a stroke ward rather than the cardiac one?)

Hello :-)

I am so sorry you had a small stroke after your op but hope that you are recovering well at this stage as it is early days :-)

There could be a few reasons you have not been contacted as yet

It could be that you were in the stroke ward and so it has not been picked up yet by the Rehab Nurses you are home

It could be they want to give you a few weeks to settle down at home

But whatever reason it might be I think it is nice to know you have a Rehab Nurse as they are very useful in answering any concerns and when the time is right if they do have Rehab classes arranging for you to join them even though again this would be after you have recovered a little more

Can you phone the ward you were on when you had your op and ask when the Rehab Nurses will be in contactor do they have a contact number for them they could give you ?

This is what I would do

Let us know how you get on :-) x

I didn't have any rehab or contact after my aortic valve was replaced, or any contact name, seems to be so routine run of the mill

Good morningI had my op mid November and rehab started January - that was 3 years ago and things have changed since then . Give yourself a chance to get over your surgery then speak to your GP (if that's possible of course 😄). Good luck

Hello. There are many reasons why cardiac rehab may not have been offered, from lack of staff due to covid to you having a small stroke. I would suggest that you wait a few days and then contact the rehab team. In the mean time, please don't worry. You must spend your time getting better. Take care 🙂 ❤

Morning - It was a few weeks after my op that the cardiac rehab team got in touch - I would give yourself a few more weeks to recover before worrying about re-hab. You really need to get over the physical effects of surgery before you start exercising - they take no prisoners trust me !!! 👍🏃🏋️

Thanks, yes I'll give it a bit more time before worrying.

Hello ktm hope your feeling well after the opp. I had the same valve replaced and a 20mm gauze repair done to my aorta, these were done as an emergency after both had burst. I was in for only 6 days. But the same for me when I phoned rehab to see if I was getting any I was told I didn't qualify for it, when I questioned about receiving advice the nurse was quite rude on the phone and abruptly asked " well what do you want to know"? Which being as it's not often I have this surgery it would have been nice to know what to expect and how I can go about getting back to normal, with friendly advice.Anyway so you might not get it, but you should have been given a little booklet with exercises in, so do these carefully, don't rush and walk a couple of hundred yds a day gradually increasing as you feel better and capable, eat healthily , keep your blood pressure down. My GP kept saying mine was ok at 137/75 for about 2 year's, but this was to high ( but I wasn't aware of the consequences even though the cardiologist kept telling my GP to get it down) I ended up with a dilated Sinus of Valsalva, so for the last 10 months I have kept my BP down to between 114/63 to 116/70 and my dilated SoV has stabilized. So keep BP and weight down and daily walks👍😉🤸Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I was told before the op that there would be rehab, so hoping for better luck than you had!
