Live for every day

Well today is my 1st anniversary of that very unwanted and unexpected heart attack, and every day I thank my lucky stars that I’m still here. Thankful for a 2nd chance. So this day 12 months ago I was on holiday mountain biking a rough steep dirt track on a Spanish hillside with friends when the pain hit. deep down I knew exactly what it was. Scary. I missed the telltale signs of the previous few weeks thinking it was an old rotator cuff injury. Being an adrenaline junkie the body has taken lifetime battering thanks to extreme sports. After a scary trip down and what seemed like a really drive to the nearest hospital I got help. The cardiology department at Santa Lucia, Cartagena were wonderful and I left 5 days later with a superb stent repair in my previously blocked LAD. The one I now know they call a widowmaker. It’s been a rollercoaster year, so much change. Lost a few KG, fitness levels back up. EF drastically improved. BP back to low normal and that’s without meds. Started building a new house, importantly back on the bike! Where am I now? Well I decided to celebrate by being back in Spain, and back on the mountain bike… and this coming week I will go and attack what has new been christened “heart attack hill” again, it will be a huge mental and physical milestone that I just have to cross. Thanks to everyone for their love and support, it’s good to still be here

Dear bertrumbrown

What a brilliant uplifting post for us all, I for one { and the dog } am jumping up and down with joy for you.

You embody all that the recovery from an illness means,

Live live live !

Ok me and a few others will never be joining you on your cycle excesses around the hills of Spain, I’m sweating just thinking of it.

Me in Lycra would look like your mum bringing home the weeks shopping in a string bag .

but fantastic that is not only your love and hobby but also you are now fit enough to take it up again.

I hope the rest of your life mirrors this day.

Your news has made me smile broadly,

Now of you go into that Spanish sunset………..

What a fantastic and uplifting post thankyou and so pleased all is going so well. I am 6 months in from STEMI with development of post MI Pericarditis to make things a bit more complicated! Like you very unexpected, 60 years old and very active. Have lost my job as a result, very unsupportive employer and was feeling very down about all the changes to my life. Have started to give myself a good talking to and will be starting some volunteer work and your post has given me so much positive thought, thankyou

So good to hear someone with such a positive outlook. It is so easy to allow the situation to take over. When you are given a second chance take that opportunity as you never know what's round the corner, good luck with the hill
