Im a 46 year old female and was first diagnosed when i was a teenager. I currently am being prescribed the following meds:

Felodipine 10mg 2od, indapimide 2.5mg 1od, perindopril erbumine 4mg 2od and spironolactone 25mg 1od.

Despite taking all of the above for years, i still have high blood pressure.

I started suffering with lower back pain right side only about 3 years ago. I also have urine incontinence and constipation. For the past 2 weeks i have a constant feeling of needing to pee. Sometimes i pee a large amount and others can be just a dribble. I always have the same feeling of bursting urge. I cannot keep still with it. Its really getting down. I spoke to GP (not my usual GP) he said i had thrush. I know its not thrush. Immediately after peeing i have a unusual pain inside. Could this possibly mean i have something wrong with my kidneys? I also have hypothyroidism.

I would be grateful for any advice as this is having huge affect on my daily way of life and mental health.

Thank you

Doesn't sound like heart related.

I know that high blood pressure and kidney problems can be related. Also, the medications may be a contributing factor for kidney probs. High blood pressure is heart related plus my father had a triple heart bypass before the age of 50 and also had high blood pressure and kidney disease.

As far as I know kidney inflammation could cause hypertension and visa versa but I would phone 111 and ask them for advice.

Could be a urinary infection. I have regular blood tests for kidney and liver function to monitor the effect of my meds. Do you get these?

Hi, thank you. I do have regular blood tests, the most recent being at the beginning of December 2021. Although i do not have copies of the results, my GP has informed me that all results are within range, apart from TFT's. GP has already altered the meds doseage.I have given a urine sample, but have not been informed of the result yet.

Thanks again

Hi jnight8843Just checking with you have you had heart attacks or diagnosed with heart failure?

What has been your most recent Blood Pressure readings?

The list of medications is consistent for cardiac conditions/Hypertension but would request medication review given some of the issues that you have mentioned/listed.

I have not had any heart failure or heart attacks. I have regular blood tests the last being at the beginning of December 2021. They were all satisfactory and within range, apart from the TFT's, which my Gp has actioned by changing my dose of thyroxine.Blood Pressure Report

Thanks for your response yes I can see from your BP chart diary that your reading in December was high both for sys&dia readings ideal BP readings 120mmHg/80mmHg uncertain if you have seen BHF guide to managing High Blood Pressure worth a look😀

Thank you. I have actually downloaded this BHF booklet, so hopefully i will be able to try and understand the condition and make changes to hopefully help reduce my readings. Thanks again.

I use Kyolic garlic for my hypertension and it has gone down at least 20mmHg since I started using it. It's use for hypertension has been peer reviewed (it's not some unproven alternative medicine ) and it helps even if you are already on medication. It's worth a try although it will take a couple of months before it starts to work.

Blood pressure levels and the kidneys are definitely connected. I damaged one of my kidneys back in 2010 when I fell over onto concrete, twisting my body as I fell. For many months I had pain and the damage was confirmed by ultrasound. My BP went up as a result of the fall, so I was prescribed medication, but with the impaired kidney I have rarely managed to get down to the magical 120/80.

While the pain you are experiencing could be kidney related , it could also be your bladder and totally unrelated to your BP. A friend of mine suffered similar symptoms after going for a pee and it turned out to be his bladder. Is the pain you are experiencing in this area? If so I would go back to your GP and see whether you can be referred for a scan. Either way, further investigation is required.

Hello. Have you considered that your problems may be due to your hypothyroidism? As your results were out of range then maybe your increased dose of levo might help?

Hi. Thanks for your response. It seems i had been taking too much levo, so it has been decreased. Thanks again

Can you get your doctor to prescribe a kidney scan because of the pain you are experiencing? I had a pain in the lower right side of my back just below the waist - I thought it might be sciatica. But, it turns out that my right kidney is smaller than my left and there is some sort of plaque blockage in the renal artery. What they don't know is if I always had the shrunken kidney or if it just happened recently.

Regarding the burning sensation you have , it really sounds like a UTI. Have they checked your urine for any bugs you might have? In the meantime, you might want to try drinking cranberry juice - it is not a cure but it helps calm UTIs to a certain extent.

Hi, thank you so much for your response. I was actually thinking of requesting my GP refer for a kidney scan. I will speak with her about this. Thank you

In case it's helpful....I had two different scans. The first one looked at the shape and size of the kidneys and that there was nothing structurally wrong. The second one looked at how blood flows to and through the kidneys (this one took a long time and was really weird because I could hear the blood flowing through my veins).
