It is very serious as if part of the clot breaks off (they are usually attached to the wall and called a mural thrombus) and lodge in a coronary artery, the brain or part of the lung. Usually the injections also help dissolve the clot. I would suggest you speak to your GP or ring 111.

Application of a cool pack after injection is said to reduce bleeding and bruising but ease check with your medical team first.

Hello,

I have had to give myself subcutaneous injections of heparin.

This is what I do.

I take a big pinch of flesh between my forefinger and thumb.

I insert the needle straight not slanted, into the held flesh. The needle needs to go all the way in.

I then push the syringe plunger very slowly and gently.

Pause before withdrawing the needle.

Then let go of my flesh and leave, no rubbing of the injection site.

I rarely bruise myself. I actually prefer to do my own as the nurses tend to give the injection too quickly and bruise me.

I alternate either side of my tummy button.

This link may help.

As already said a blood clot is very serious. I’ve had 2 now. The first time I had to inject and like yourself I was black from the bruising even though I followed all the tips and instructions on administering the injections. Fortunately for the second one they gave me rivaroxiban tablets to take , first an emergency dose and now a lower dose that I think I’ll be staying on for life. Perhaps the rivaroxiban could be an option for you ? Speak to gp or hospital and see what they say.

Hi, I had to give myself blood thinning injections following indications of a blood clot. I found if I pinched the skin and injected at a slight angle it was better also. Key is to not rub or touch the injection site even though it stings as this is the main cause of bruising. Over 10 days I didn't bruise thankfully like I have I the past. Hope this helps.
