Denosumab and AF

Hi, I had a minimally invasive mitral valve repair plus a cryomaze proceedure in June this year. I was doing really well and had had no episodes of AF. I have osteoporosis in my spine and hip and had received 3 yearly infusions of Zelondronate. I was hopeful that this would have been successful. Anyway, I visited the Robert and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in September and my Dexa scan showed no improvement in my spine and a worsening in my hip. I was told as my osteoporosis is severe (even though I have never broken a bone) and I would have to have more treatment. I had read that zelondronate can cause heart arrythmias so I was keen not to risk that. Denosumab 6 monthly injections were suggested as I am unable to tolerate bisphosphonates. Less than a week later I had a heart rate of 150 and AF on a treadmill assessment at cardiac rehab. This was followed by a chest infection. The exact same thing has now happened on the treadmill 3 times at cardiac rehab and an episode of AF following a walk up hill to my house. I have been referred back to my surgeon Mr Paul Modi as he is concerned. Has anyone else experienced problems with Denosumab? This seems to me to be too much of a coincidence! I am 63.

In my opinion this Denosumab has been dished out a bit too readily. It was pressed on me when I had a hip replacement due to an unfortunate accident not osteroporosis linked. I refused and continue to take calcium and vit D .Others I know of have had similar experiences. So do be advised by your cardiologist who should be raising the issue on your behalf with your Denosumab provider.

Thank you for your comment. I should have an appointment soon with my cardiologist and I will certainly be bringing it up.
