Does anyone runs after valve surgery? There is a limitation of maximum HR 140. Is this for everyone? I usually experience higher HR while running.

Running after valve surgery
Morning Rickyhe. I underwent open heart surgery for a replacement valve 7 years ago. Since my operation I find my heart rate can go too high for my personal comfort when training. Having always been a competitive runner I’ve found it difficult to keep myself in check. If I race with an elevated HR then I will feel unwell for hours/days after the event. I now do ultra events which embrace joggers/walkers. At least I can jog along knowing I’m able to walk if need be. I now regard myself as a participant rather than a competitor…! It’s been hard to except I won’t be on the podium but at least I’m still doing what I love.
Hi Rickyhe, I had AVR 2.5 years ago. I was 49, nothing else wrong with my heart & had a mechanical valve fitted. I don't remember being told about maximum heart rate but do remember the cardiologist saying I could be back running 5 in 6 months if I wanted.I didn't make 6 months but now try to run at least once a week and swim once a week. My average HR for running is high 140's with half the time in 150's, I walk for a bit when it reaches 160. I'm currently just over 28 minutes for a 5k on the flat.
All I remember about HR advice was the rehab nurse concerned that walking the dog would not elevate my HR enough.

When I started running my cardiologist told my trainer a max of 160 but hey I’m sure it must vary. Check with your medical people first. Enjoy getting back to having fun - it’s a great feeling! 🙏
The convention is that a healthy heart should not exceed 220bpm less your age, apart from very briefly. If you've been advised to stick to a lower limit there must be a medical reason.
