Hi, I really feel for you. I suffered from AF with the same symptoms, until I had my ablation. The best advice I can give you is to try not to panic when you get one of these episodes. If your symptoms have been diagnosed as AF with no other heart conditions then it is not life threatening and getting stressed will make it worse. Try to breathe deeply while it’s happening. Secondly, when you are not having an episode, think about some lifestyle changes if you haven’t already. You could try cutting out known triggers such as alcohol, caffeine and chocolate. Drink lots of water, this is very important. Try to go for a walk daily. And get plenty of sleep.

When you finally get your appointment, ask the consultant about the possibility of catheter ablation as a solution to your condition. I assume you are already on a blood thinner and a beta blocker such as Bisoprolol and possibly other drugs. If not you should at least be on a blood thinner so ask your GP.

AF is very distressing but usually not life threatening on its own, so try not to worry. Good luck!

Hi Hazel ,

Really sorry to read about what you are going through and I can relate to how you feel having only being diagnosed 3 weeks ago myself. During an AF attack the best thing I could and did do was to get to A&E as I felt very poorly. I was on the middle of the attack so doctors were able to diagnose the condition very quickly and put me on blood thinners and beta blockers immediately. This seems to have regulated the condition for now but there have been side effects which are starting to settle down now. I am not sure if you are on medication but think you need to be,

I too have lots of questions and have immersed myself almost to the point of obsession with knowledge . Sometimes not a good thing. Like you my Blood pressure is all over the place. I have need on medication to control this for years which again can be a cause of my AF . As love swimming has said an ablation may be something to consider and also trying to identify what triggers your condition is important too . There is a very help guide to living with AF on the foundation website which I recommend.

I am not sure that this is much help but just wanted to reassure you that you are not on your own with this . It is scary but once you come to terms with it there are ways it can be managed.

One of the biggest frustrations at this time has been trying to get so see a GP and having to rely on phone consultations which are not easy to get . Sadly it is not difficult to see why A&E ‘s are under such pressure.

Regards

Andy
