I had a bad cholesterol so high and my doctor gave me a medicine Simvastatine 20 mg. I feel a muscle pain and feel so weak. How long does it takes? I want to do some exercise but after my work I feel so so tired and want to lie and rest.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I had muscle pain with Simvastatin but a chat with my GP and a change to Atorvastatin cured this.

However what is not so much PUBLICISED IS The need for an ANNUAL LIVER FUNCTION BLOOD TEST....... If Statins are so beneficial - Why do you need this test......and secondly, What DAMAGE IS BEING DONE TO YOUR LIVER FUNCTION by taking these drugs...????! I do suspect big pharma as Statins are KNOWN to cause CANCER and has had a World wide RECALL as they changed THE FORMULA as this Formula HAS A CANCER CAUSING CONSTITUENT..

We ARE ALL GOING TO DIE !!!!! NON of know when , where or how.....but sure as eggs are eggs - WE WILL DIE ..

IF you die from a heart attack ... at least you won't feel a thing....

I have regular LFT (liver function tests), and anybody who is on Statins who is not having them should ask their GP for one.

You also say "IF you die from a heart attack ... at least you won't feel a thing...." This is total rubbish. My father died from one and he was in absolute agony for about 15 minutes!!! Some people do lose consciousness immediately but many do not!!!

My GP's have tried me on several different types of statin over the years, as I discovered, some have worked for me and some have not and this is the experience of most people I know as is the case with most specific drugs!

Until I became very ill 4 years ago I was a super fit person and did an almost exceptional amount of exercise for a 68 year old and at that time I was on Simvastatin and getting on with it very well indeed, but some months ago my GP switched me onto Rosuvastatin, initially at 20mg strength and then only recently the hospital has increased the dose to 40mg. My Cholesterol is now well under control.

So Feligue I would suggest you go back to your GP and express the fact that you are experiencing some not very nice side effects and they should change you to another type with immediate effect...... Oh and don't let your surgery admin people get in the way, insist on immediate action!

Research clearly shows that statins don't cause muscle pain. Just as many people taking a placebo had he same amount of pain as those taking statins. However if you really can't tolerate it there are plenty of alternatives. BHF recently had a Zoom meeting where the top specialists discussed precisely this. The meeting is still online. There is also an article on bhf.org.uk/what-we-do/news-.... You can watch the video conference on youtube.com/watch?v=om7PnTd...

Go back to the doctor and tell him you're symptoms and that this is common with Statins and you need to try something else instead. It works fine for millions of us

Hi Feligue, how long have you been taking them? It normally takes 4-8 weeks for your body to get used to a new drug, so try to bear with it for a while and it may improve. If it doesn't, or you really can't tolerate it anymore, go back to your GP and ask for an alternative.

Atorvastatin, Simvastatin and Pravastatin have all gave me muscle aches and limited my ability to exercise. I was on each of them for a couple of months with no improvement. My GP advised that, in his experience, this was a common side effect and I ended up with him prescribing Ezetimibe. This medication is usually prescribed with a statin, but in my case I took it as an alternative. Blood tests later revealed that it had had no effect whatsoever on my cholesterol.

I was eventually persuaded by another clinician to try the more modern statin Rosuvastatin and what a difference - no aches! Just 10mg made an almost immediate effect on my cholesterol. I have now been taking this for almost 3 years without any issues.

Hopefully there will be a medication that will suit you. It is just a matter of finding it!
