I’m doing the Second Nature programme which is sponsored by the NHS. It’s low carbohydrate but not particularly low fat. I’m doing it to reduce cholesterol (low carbohydrates is important for that) and keep my BP low. Weight loss is relatively slow but steady and I don’t feel hungry. Those who have tried Weight Watchers and Slimming World say this is better because it retrains your eating habits so you don’t put all the weight back on again. 🤞🏻

If you need to reduce faster you could try the 800 diet.

Good luck.

I’m waking with headaches too and I think I get dehydrated in the night. I’m already drinking 2 litres of water daily plus tea and coffee. But the drugs I have for my Rheumatoid Disease give me night sweats anyway. 🙁

The coffee wont be helping. Tea is best if weak.

I know but I do love my strong black coffee in the morning and decaf just won’t do! ☹️

I know Lola. I like a coffee but i just keep it to my cafe visit. I do notice it if i have more than 2 in a day . Im actual fact ive got to like Karo. Eventually i came to the conclusion that if its got to go its got to go. Its adiction that can be broken. Try the Karo.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will stick to one decent coffee in the morning and have tea or herbal tea the rest of the time.

Morning,

Husband had very high blood pressure, and the headaches. These went once the blood pressure was under control. You have already had good advice about diet and losing weight. What I would say is that lots of us on the forum follow the Mediterranean diet recommended by BHF, I had open heart surgery so follow that diet. I have blood tests yearly and my last one my folic acid was low along with my iron so put on tablets for 4 months.

Hope you get your blood pressure under control.

Take good care.

Pauline

Yes I agree the Mediterranean diet is excellent. I was on that before but not losing weight on it. Probably it was the 🍷!!

Sounds like your blood pressure, try walking start of gently and build up once the medication as your blood pressure under control you can start to push. You haven’t said how high your pressure is. My pressure is on the low side.

Unfortunately exercise alone does not shed weight. You need to change your eating habits as well I’m afraid.

Hi again,

They are a wee bit high especially the diastolic, hopefully your medication will bring them both down and you will be feeling much better.

Let us know how you go after a while on your drugs.

Take care Pauline

If you are short of folic acid (vitamin B9), I would hope that your GP has thought to get your homocysteine level checked. There might be an hereditary factor involved. A higb homocysteine level increases the risk of blood clots. This was my situation and I too suffered with a high BP for many years without proper diagnosis, that was until I had a heart attack caused by a blood clot and a narrowed artery which needed stents.

I hope that the medication works for you. Don't be afraid to ask for an alternative blood pressure medication if Amlodipine upsets you in any way.

Thank you i will ask the question xx

Don't be surprised if your GP hasn't got a clue what homocysteine is. I have had to explain it to mine, despite the practice being advised by letter from the local hospital pathology department.

I've never thought about my weight; it stays s table and isn't bad but after my heart attack I changed to the Mediterranean diet. I did not try to lose weight so I was shocked when I got summer clothes out and they all fell off. I weighed myself and had lost 28lbs.

NRd19 profile image
NRd19 in reply to Qualipop

Might look at this is it an easy diet to follow x

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply to NRd19

Quite easy. My biggest problem was weaning my husband off his pies and chips. He still has no idea his Shepherds pies and stir fries are made with quorn. The BHF main website has hundreds of recipes. The biggest things to avoid are takeaways, ready meals, pizzas, fried or fatty foods, cakes etc and crisps ( and the bee r). Fill up on veggies and most things in moderation. I still have a piece of cake maybe once a month. Use a smaller plate; concentrate on eating healthy foods rather than obsessing about losing weight.

Thank you we do cook fresh but also we have takeaways and with lockdown was having more than normal , crisp is my downfall can leave the rest 😞 xx

I was overweight for about 53 years so the damage has been done which is a combination of clogged up arteries as saturated fat turns to plaque - no recovery possible from that. Only watching saturated fat, sugar, and salt content in food to hopefully extend my life a bit longer and avoid too serious an operation or stroke - who knows however as it is a matter of narrowing the odds.

My first start for a year was a 'bin diet' where I literally binned a lot of food on my plate or at least part of any higher-calorie item.

After that having seen a video on Youtube of Field Marshall Montgomery interviewed by Lord Taylor around 1970: I took to heart his comment about being a 'commander of myself' and it worked for me literally ordering myself not to eat when I shouldn't. For me it worked though listening to that interview made me realise I would have done well to have seen it 48 years earlier.

For me the key to losing weight was using a diary to track everything I ate. I used myfitnesspal.com but there are others. It's important to record every single thing you eat - you'd be surprised how it all adds up. You should also get into the habit of weighing yourself everyday to make sure you are going in the right direction. Sometimes headaches are caused by eyestrain or sinuses so hopefully everything is good in those areas.
