Hiya a EF of 51% isn't bad, normal range is around 55 to 70%. So it wouldn't be classed as heart failure. Are you on any medication for it?

in reply toGracieOS

Not sure that is quite right, Heart Failure is based on symptoms, not just the numbers.

E.g. You can have a lower EF but not be in Heart Failure, as in you have no symptoms.

OK. I was told EF needed to be below a certain level for heart failure, but I'm not an expert, just going on what I was told in my case.

I am not saying you are wrong, but I was told that diagnosis is based on symptoms, not the numbers.

What a tough time you are having. I wonder if a brief summary from your GP might help? What they think your heart problem is, and how they are treating it? I expect you have tried, so forgive me if you have , or if this is not helpful. (It always helps me to see the issues clearly laid out in front of me, and be reassured they are not missing anything).

You might also mention how down you feel and see if they have any suggestions.

Hi you need to contact yourGP as your leg swelling could be due to your heart failure.

Hi djleighp, some great advice from the forum, I agree with gaz-chops as my cardiologist informed me that the numbers are just a measure which is only part of a diagnosis. What is also important is how you feel and how it affects your lifestyle. Gracie is also correct from my understanding 51% is near the average range. The leg swelling needs to get sorted as this can lead to problems. Think it’s time to go see your GP and show them your legs and also discuss your depression. Exercise is important and will help with your heart and probably with your depression but easy to say but much harder to do. There is help out there to guide you through depression but first thing is to try and get yourself started on the road out of it. First part of the road is see a professional. Your Gp is the first stop on your journey. Best of luck and I hope you find the strength to make the call.

Yes. Go see a Dr. Don’t worry and don’t give up!

Hi djleighhp. That, in my opinion, looks definitely like Water Retention. I am not Medically trained in any way but have had it. Not so much now since I had OHS but still get it occasionally! You really need to check with your Doctor though. If in doubt, check it out!!

Hi are you on any meds for high blood pressure, I take amlodipine and it can cause swollen ankles, I had heart failure but my EF was 20, mine was caused by cardiomyopathy there are definitely a lot of different symptoms and causes for heart failure, an echo scan is an excellent way of finding out what's going on, I had it for years and never new a thing I put any symptoms down to old age, I was 58🤣, mabe if you could could contact your gp he could get some tests done and maybe look into a diuretic for your ankles if your stomach is swollen as well he should definitely check your symptoms out to find out what's causing water retention, I understand how these things get you down but sometimes a diagnosis can help when you know what's causing it you don't worry about it as much as it can be treated , I hope you start to feel a bit better soon, there is a lot of help in the NHS I wish I had made use of it more, take care char
