What’s an ideal reading on blood pressure medication?

My husband had a HA 3yrs ago and has been on the following daily.

Amlodipine 5mg

Ramipril 10mg

Atorvastatin 40mg

Aspirin 75mg

His blood pressure readings have been bit high (I think) and we are going back to consultant to discuss but I just wondered what is an ideal range when you are on blood pressure medication. I think his GP said <135/85 but his readings are bizarrely higher when he first gets up than when we do them midday. And obviously end of day after work they are higher than that too.

Not crazy 136/95 or a few 132/94 so it’s the lower number which isn’t as low as he was suggested.

Just wondered ahead of appointment does anyone else find they are higher first thing? Or know what the idea range is.

I should say he is 46.

Thanks you guys are always so helpful!

One thing we did stop a year ago with GP agreement was Bisporol as he was so tired and just a little worried it’s that which is messing it all up a little. But he has been so much more with it and able to exercise walk normally for first time since it happened.

Hi, I have had heart surgery and my consultant said if it starts with a 13 and an 8 it’s ok. Might depend when he takes the drugs. I take mine in the morning and it can be a little high before that. It took me a long time to find the right combination of drugs. After surgery I’ve gone with a slight variation and it’s the best yet. I’m on a small dose of bisoprolol, it seems to help me keep it low all day (plus 4 more drugs!)

Hiya

Thanks for the reply, not sure what a low dose of bisporol might be, he was on 2.5mg daily.

Yes, these readings are before his tablets.

Goodness that’s a lot for you 🙈

I'm on 2.5 - years ago I think the target was 140/90 but they've pushed that to 135/85. Those readings don't sound too bad. My old machine used to do an average of 3 readings as the first one was always a bit high just due to putting the cuff on

Hi Clare, those readings sound pretty ‘normal’ to me, but be guided by the consultant - not us!

I’m a few years older, and had a sudden cardiac arrest 3 years ago, I’m on 5mg twice/day Ramipril

25mg Eplerenone once (morning)

Bisoprolol 10mg once (morning).

The bisoprolol knocks the energy too!

My BP is similar to the figures you quoted - I routinely measure about 6.00pm once I’ve wound down, but ahead of eating.

My cardiologist seems to be happy despite a range of + or - around 20%!?

Hope this helps

Taking Ace Inhibitors like Ramipril does mean reducing or cutting out alcohol as it raises blood pressure and also reducing or cutting out any or all of the following: Lo-salt, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes including sweet potato, dried fruit particularly apricots - though these are listed usually on the small print we often fail to read .

5mg of amlodipine is a lower dose as I take 10mg though my age is 78. In some people it takes awhile for it to have full affect as it builds up in the system and the possible side affects are very very many.

On blood pressure I usually take mine fairly regularly though the second reading taken 5 minutes after the first is always lower no matter how calm I am or how long I sit beforehand. A third reading is by majority lower than the second. When I say lower my reading on Sunday at 3pm was 152s 78d 55p and a reading taken after 5 minutes 136s 76d 54p and a third reading 125s 77d 56p . Reading the Wednesday before at 9am was 142s 74d 65p and 7 minutes later 118s 76d 64p. So no need to be super worried from just one high reading.

There are certain factors that do not help blood pressure and that is the person's weight. I lowered mine by 25% and have managed to keep it near the lower end of the weight chart. Back to the weight I was at 23 years old. As pointed out in 1970 by Field Marshall Montgomery a person has to become a commander of themselves first - tell oneself what not to do and what to do.

Would you kindly ask your GP if one from the Tan group would be more beneficial. It’s been for me. Good luck
