MRI results

Hi has anyone got any idea how I can get someone to explain my mri results? I’m seeing a private cardiologist who did follow up and just said it’s abnormal and sent me an email with results! I can’t understand a lot of it and rang gp last week who can’t either ! Got to wait to be seen again in July !

If you are paying for private treatment, I should have thought that would include a discussion of your results. There might be things you can do to improve your condition. Or things you shouldn't do!

You’d of thought so wouldn’t you I rang the secretary last week to see how f I could just ask a couple of questions about results and she said it would be 190 pounds for a phone consultation! I really can’t afford this just to ask a few questions! Wondering if I should complain to the private hospital ?

It seems outrageous to me that having a scan doesn't include a discussion of the results. It makes me appreciate the NHS, in spite of its faults.

Me too and Ionlywent private because I thought it might take the pressure off nhs and be quicker turns out I was wrong and now I wish I hadn’t!!

Thankyou for your reply I am going to find out if there is a PALS dept at the private hospital tomorrow and email them I don’t want to make a complaint as I don’t want to go back to nhs long wait as I’m worried about a few things on report that I don’t understand! How on earth did they think I could understand cardiology language is beyond me !

Hi Best the BHF nurses on the helpline are absolutely amazing and very well informed they really can help interpret results I had my echo interpreted by them I was told so much believe it or not after seeing a consultant cardiologist last year who told me barely anything but the nurses are brilliant and give you all the time in the world! My GP is also very supportive luckily I am awaiting cardiac mri results from 11th May NHS waited since November to have it though I wish I could of gone private it’s awful isn’t it though you feel bad because obviously we love our NHS but when you’re worrying and need treatment I totally understand how you must be feeling

That seems wholly inadequate. My cardiologist talked me through all the measurements of concern. If it is abnormal are you being referred for further investigation or treatment?

Had angiogram echo and mri next test 24 hour ecg which is in June ! Then he’s going to have a cardiologist meeting to discuss findings , which is very good of him but I’d like to be informed with each step as to findings not just be told abnormal and be emailed a report that sounds awful but even gp can’t understand!

Agreed, not good enough and will create worry and anxiety. I’d be pushing back for clarity. Perhaps your GP can push back?

Thankyou for replying I’m so anxious and worried it’s making me feel so much worse! Gp has suggested talking therapy to help with anxiety! I will ask her if she could ask them to elaborate the findings to her in a way she can understand!

I’ve been through it, stay positive and they can work miracles when it comes to any treatment. If your GP can’t understand it she should definitely push back

I had my MRI scan on the NHS and received a letter a few weeks later, it was the letter the cardiologist sent to my GP and I was copied in. On first reading I simply couldn't understand it, was it good news or bad news? what do some of those terms mean to the lay man like me? Some googling online helped but also I'm lucky someone at my work used to work as a medical specialist so was able to help me understand it was good news, and so did a friend who is a retired cardiac nurse! I got to speak to the GP a few days later on the phone and she had similar problems although her understanding was greater than mine as you'd expect, but even she said it was hard to fully grasp. Reading your message got me thinking who would I go to if I didn't have these people, I would have written back or emailed the GP's secretary to ask for an explanation. I also wondered if you have access to your local cardiac community rehab team, is that something they can do to support you? take care and all the best

Thankyou so much for your reply I’m so glad you had friends with a bit of knowledge on the subject ! Suboptimal scan I’ve googled and it says not good quality pictures and artifact from sternum wire which appears to be pressing on rv free wall is the one that’s worried me as I’ve read the wires can puncture the heart !!!! Cardiac nurse has Said maybe they need to do the scan again ?

You could always speak to one of specialist nurses at BHF, I am sure they would be willing to explain the principles of the terminology to you. Appreciate your consultant should be informing you, but for short term reassurance might be worth a try.
