Question about stitches after AVR

So guys wondering if anyone can help me.

I had to go to the doctors a couple of days after discharge from hospital to have a couple of stitches removed where the drain tubes had been. These were big black almost darning thread stitches.

When the nurse took them out there was also some nylon type thread which she cut close to the skin. I still have a bit of this nylon poking out and puckering up a bit of skin. Is this just an internal stitch that will dissolve in time (just over 3 weeks since op now) or should I be heading back to get it removed?

Your thoughts greatly appreciated

Take care all

Sam

Morning Samgeorge

Think that’s a look see by your GP/nurse. Can’t speak from experience, mine taken out before I left hospital. So if you have a cardio nurse phone if not your GPs surgery.

Hope you continue to make a great recovery.

I had 4 pacing wires removed whilst still in hospital I believe. Guess it will be a trip to the GP 😉

Hi Think you replied to me instead of Gil. Like you had my pacing wires removed in hospital last thing they removed before discharge. I had 3 still can see where they were. I think your right and a phone call is in order.

Think these will be pacing wires (was there two)used to monitor your heart rhythm during your heart surgery. Mines were just cut close to skin. But as always if not sure check with your GP

Hi, the black thread you are talking about are not disolvable from the drain tube site. They need to be taken out. It is possible to take them out yourself... (not that I am advising it, but erm I did!) So probably best to ring the GP, they will probably get a nurse to do it anyway. (it doesn't hurt... not that I would know...) HTH

Thanks Smarticus, the black thread was removed by the nurse, it’s just a bit of nylon like thread left in.

I would go back and get it taken out- leaving it will be risk of infection. My daughter had her thread left in her head after her cranioplasty and was left in from her head drain and her surgeon said it needed removing. Her community nurse came in to do it which was easier for us. Hope this helps

How are you feeling after your AVR?

Really good thanks. Just over 3 weeks since the op. Very little pain, just a bit of discomfort really. Walking for exercise and feeling stronger each day. 😁

Sending my best wishes for you next Thursday. The thought of it is far worse than the operation itself. You will be fine and remember once you come round your on the road to health. All the best for a speedy recovery. Take care Sam.
