is it normal for an already-lower RHR to get even LOWER after starting exercise?

hi all!

so my RHR has always been on the lower side, usually 63-58 average. since the new year i started a weight loss + exercise plan (just walking right now) and have lost about 10 pounds!

however i've noticed my RHR has gotten even lower than usual, most noticeable when sleeping. when i'm awake it can go down to 54-56, and when i sleep it's been slowly going down a beat or two every night, last night it was at 49.

i was wondering if this sounds about right or if i should be worried? i feel fine but i've never had it that low before. i've contacted my GP and haven't heard back yet xx

(i was having bad dreams all night which is why my HR was spiking)

A resting heart rate of 58-63 isn't especially low. But even so it's normal for the heart rate to drop with weight loss and exercise. My scores are similar, I'm not worried, in fact I'm quite pleased!

thank you for responding :) in the back of my mind i'm telling myself i'm sure it's just my heart getting stronger but just wasn't sure x

If it helps, this is my experience.

Diagnosed with “mild” atherosclerosis plus “mild” aortic stenosis in January 2020. At the time my RHR was around 65.

Since then I have lost five stones and greatly increased my exercise level (to around 400 minutes per week). My RHR is now usually in the 50 - 55 range. When resting with my feet up or in bed it can be in the 40’s.

As I say, just my experience and the weight loss/ exercise may be coincidental.

I would mention it to your gp to ease any anxiety if you want but, in the absence of any symptoms, I shouldn’t worry unduly. I have read some research to indicate that a RHR in the 50 - 70 range is good.

Well done on the changes you’ve made!

Sounds about right. That’s part of the reason for losing weight and doing exercise. Are you on a beta blocker? You’re GP may want to revisit that now you’re heart rate is getting a bit lower.
