Hi Jane, I know exactly how you are feeling, I had several cancellations before I had my AVR, the third one on the morning of my op after getting into my operation gown. It’s probably the worst part, as you gear yourself up mentally for it, only to then have to wait again - doesn’t do your stress levels any good. The way I coped was to be thankful that at least I wasn’t in the position of the person who had taken my slot as an emergency. Just try to stay positive.

The op itself went fine and I was back on the ward the following day and sitting out of bed the day after. Had a slight hiccup by getting complete heart block and needing a pacemaker, but still home in a week. If you haven’t already, get yourself a v-shaped pillow, invaluable in the early days to help you sleep slightly propped up, as very difficult to sleep. Take things slowly and don’t overdo it, it’s very easy to think you can do more than your body wants you to do and then regret it. You may find your concentration levels and memory are rubbish to start with, this is normal and both will improve as you recover. You may also find your sense of taste is a bit off, I still can’t eat some biscuits that I used to love. I was driving short distances after six weeks and back at work after 12 weeks.

Hope you’ll get your op next time and you can start your recovery.

Wendy

Hello Lisar1703

I had Aortic valve replaced and bypass 4 years ago, and my life is back on track. You must have had lots of advice while you have been waiting, but what I would say is listen to what your told about exercising, you will be given breathing exercises to do, your lungs take a hit as well as your heart. These I called huffing and puffing! carry on doing them when you get home, they really help. Your lungs collapse when we are on bypass so they need a bit of help to get back to normal.

Let your brain catch up with what as happened to your body, it will be trying to figure out what as happened. So when your body says I am tired you rest, and if you get emotional remember it’s perfectly normal.

As I said it’s 4 years since my op and I have been grateful every day to the medical team that gave me my life back.

I know it’s easy for me to say everything will be fine but it really will be.

I wish you lots of luck and a great recovery.

Pauline

I had a triple bypass in October 2018. Like most people it was delayed, it's a nerve shredding time I know, but eventually your turn will arrive.

I hadn't had a heart attack, but my angina symptoms were getting worse, so much as I'd hoped for stents it was decided that a bypass was by far the better option.

I won't pretend otherwise, the first few weeks following the operation aren't much fun, but you absolutely have to dig deep and complete your breathing exercises and your regular walks.

Then, about six weeks or so after the operation, you suddenly start to feel much, much better. And here's the thing, it's not just "better" like you felt before the operation, it's "better" like you felt ten or twenty years ago! In other words, it's absolutely, amazingly better!

A bypass effectively re-sets the clock, it means you start again with a brand new set of arteries that are capable of delivering an abundance of oxygenated blood to your heart. It makes you realise how much you'd given up over the years due to the creeping progress of heart disease.

But (sadly there's always a "but"isn't there), the big problem is that your heart disease hasn't gone away. Yes, you'll now have some valuable medication, but to really slow down the march of your heart disease you'll have to make some serious lifestyle changes. That means regular and quite serious exercise, quitting nicotine, a healthy diet, a healthy weight, moderate drinking, stress management, and establishing proper sleep patterns. If you can get these things implemented then the statistics show that you have excellent odds for enjoying many more years of healthy and active life.

Good luck!

Thank you so much chappychap I love your story so glad that your all good now hopefully I'll get there too soon it's getting closer now 😯 the amazing better bit sounds good to me thanks again Jane x

Hi Jane,

Sorry to hear you have had prior cancellations, the weight for your op is hard. I had a double bypass in Feb this year after struggling for months before that with pain and crippling unstable angina. Although it's a long recovery with good days and bad days it's amazing how much better you will immediately feel. Post eight months on I go out running, use an exercise bike, do boxing training etc but by far the most important thing is I can play with my young children and know that I am there for them.

Hope you get your op and fingers crossed it goes well. I had a major worry before mine as to what pyjamas to wear as men's pj's only come in old-man or Hugh Hefner styles!

Lovely to hear from you, being a bit foggy is normal remember you have had a big dose of anesthetiser and it takes time to run it’s course. Slowly does it, and now your on the mended heart road you will get your stamina back before you know it. Keep doing those breathing exercises really helps your lungs get back to normal.

Best wishes Pauline
