Cooked breakfast and cholesterol

I hope this isn’t a silly question.

I had a cholesterol check last week (at 5.30pm) as it was part of my annual blood pressure check. It was over 5 for the first time and it was my LDL and trics that were slight raised. Jokingly I said could it be because of the big fry up, instead of the porridge and berries I always have, that I had eaten that morning at breakfast (we had treated ourselves to an overnight stay in a hotel) and the GP said yes as it’s a ‘snapshot in time’. Is this correct or was he joking do u think?

Depends which test you had. If it was one where you received the result straight away that does give you the glucose level at that moment. If it was a test that was sent to the lab with results a day or two later then that gives a result of any spikes over the previous 3 months

Sorry but the test your referring to is for blood glucose levels.

Essex girl is asking about cholesterol levels.

My understanding is that the tests for cholesterol and triglycerides are a point in time, e.g. the levels that are in your blood when the sample was taken.

I’ve been having lipid blood tests for over 30 years as was identified with high cholesterol at 19 years old. I’ve always had a fasting blood test but I know that’s not always possible depending on the time of the appointment.

I would suggest you’d want to know what your results would be based on a normal days food intake and any medical decisions based on that, therefore the treat of a cooked breakfast would make the test not representative of a normal day.

How did your doctor suggest proceeding, are they going to repeat the test either now or at another review?

The first GP emailed me the results with a link on how to lower my cholesterol. After we’d discussed lifestyle and food intake etc, the second GP wasn’t unduly concerned but said to be aware of it, which I do anyway. He then went onto tell me that me cardio vascular score was an excellent 3.3% for a woman of my age, which reassured me. All the the other tests done as part of my BP review were fine so nothing until my next review in 2021.
