Did I have a heart attack?

Sensei_Mark profile image

Last night at around 3am, I was woken by extreme pain. I was laying on my right side, when suddenly it felt like someone was sitting on my left side. Intense pain in chest, neck, left shoulder and arm.

The worst of the pain went away after about 15 minutes, but I still feel uncomfortable and out of breath 3 1/2 hours later.

I think this was possibly the first of more.

No-one at home knows about this yet.

Yes, I will tell them and see a doctor for tests!

Glad to see you will be seeking medical advice. Just don't delay. Your previous posts suggest you should have done this days ago.

Don’t muck about. At the very least dial 111 and possibly 999.

I understand why you’re reluctant but had I not known intuitively when to ask my wife to dial 999 I wouldn’t be here writing this.

Those around you will be supportive.

With symptoms like that you should be dialling the emergency services asap. You must be checked out today, please don't delay, your future may depend upon it.

Thank goodness you went, wishing you all the best, an angiogram is the gold standard so you should get the diagnosis you have been searching for.

When you can let us know how you get on.

Update....

Not a heart attack. Just an extremely bad angina attack.

Waiting to talk to doc about today's tests, and further tests. CT scan ok (so I'm told).

More updates when I get them.

Angiogram done.

Heart, lungs and everything else is hunky dory.

Just laying here waiting for them to de-catheterise me.

It appears that my hiatus hernia may be to blame. It can cause inflammation of the sternum/rib cartilage, and is very often mistaken for heart conditions.

That can be EXTREMELY painful. I have a friend with costocondritis at the moment and very similar, very painful & initially was a suspected HA. I hope the get you comfy asap. Get well soon.

Yes, it certainly is. Now to find a good gastro surgeon. They try not to do anything with hernias unless they are stopping blood supply to the stomach or this happens.

Hi HHH2017, do you know what advice your friend was given regarding costochondritis?

HHH2017 profile image
HHH2017 in reply to Sensei_Mark

She’s been given morphine and on COMPLETE bed rest. BP very low so community nurses checking it every other day, an infection in her liver is also suspected so nurses doing bloods too. BED REST does seem to be the only thing she can do to help it get better. How are you doing?

Many thanks for the reply. No chance of getting morphine here, it's reserved for cancer and chronically ill patients.

I'm still continually painful. I need to see a specialist for some good meds.

I hope your friend recovers soon. It's not at all pleasant.

She’s in Wales. Morphine has really helped but does make he think maybe she can get up then pays for it later BUT she’s a single mum so bedrest is sooo difficult. She recommends doing as little movement as you possibly can to allow internal swelling to heal & subside. Hope you get to see specialist soon.

Hi here's usual NHS advice about costochondritis.

Morphine is not the usual treatment offered here in the UK either.

Hi all, back home now after 4 days in hospital and a taxi with blue lights and sirens!

Just to confirm that my heart and lungs are as fit as a fiddle. The pain was a combination of my hiatus hernia and costocondritis.

So it's back to my gastroenterologist and finding a good rheumatologist.

Many thanks to you all for your kind words and support.

Thank you Pauline. I'll still be on here because my experience may help others.

Good to be home, even though I look like I've done 10 seconds with Jason Statham, with all my bruising 😂
