MVD and admissions In the Uk

Hi all

I have diagnosed MVD/PM & ACS/LQTc. How many of you get admitted to hospital with your spasms? And which ward! I always end up on AMU (Acute medical unit) and never CCU or a Cardiac Ward as never deemed “serious enough” unless my Troponin up. AMU never “take it seriously “ as I believe they never fully understand the seriousness of the condition, while on iv nitrates if I happen to doze off, I wake up to sudden chest pain as the nurses have turned the nitrate infusion down!

I find now am putting off going in sooner than I should due to this, despite having a plan set in ED and flagged on the front of my records...and the last time I waited so long it resulted in a raised Troponin!

I am at present getting very disturbing pains which I know I should go in for sooner rather than later, but hate the way I’m treated. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this and how they have managed it, despite letters from my local cardiologist & Professor at the Brompton heart lung hospital.

Please don't wait, if you have to go . Have you tried asking them why they turned the nitrate IV down. Im sure your sick to the back teeth with everything. Please be sensible, you never know when you might get that perfect admission. Regards Sheena

Hello Gizzimos

Many of us living with Microvascular and or vasospastic angina can face difficulties when we go into hospital.

Unfortunately Microvascular and vasospastic angina are under recognised and poorly understood.

After several awful experiences I made a formal complaint and discussed with the Head of Cardiology and Director of Nursing how my pain not being treated properly has caused me harm.

My care also improved once I had written proof of my vasospastic angina following an angiogram with acetylcholine.

This type of angiogram and testing for microvascular dysfunction is being carried out at St Thomas's hospital

This thread discusses the test.

I have now had my care transfered to a Interventional Cardiologist at a leading north London hospital where I go for my in patient treatment.

I have learnt to be assertive and advocate for my care. The staff on CCU now know me and are very supportive. They do not turn down my GTN without asking me first even waking me at night if necessary.

I also have the support of a Cardiac psychologist and the Pain Team as I have a Patient controlled analgesia system with morphine when I am in hospital.

In my admission plan I also have copies of the BHF information about MVA and Vasospastic angina as well as the latest research articles.

This has taken some time to achieve however my care has improved over the years.

I no longer hear 'Mrs Milkfairy you can't possibly have angina your coronary arteries are clear ' as they turn off my GTN 😱

If you need to go in you must.

Take someone with you to negotiate with the staff. Ask to speak to the nurse or doctor in charge if there are problems. Definitely ask to be reviewed by a member of the Cardiology team

Take copies of your clinic letters from your Cardiologists.

Good luck, stay strong and I hope you receive the care you not only need but are entitled too.
