Sorry, very personal question but is it clear/white phlegm or does it have a colour tinge?

Hi, It's clear....

Could it be meds related, ramapril, lisinopril? If so can you ask for a change to candesartan?

My husband has heart failure and he has a phlegmy cough which, after loads of tests to eliminate anything else, was decided it was a heart cough. He was prescribed furosmide which did help but he had to stop taking due to blood pressure issues

Hi, Thank you for your reply, I am on candestartan & furosemide. ...guess it's back to the doctor. ...best wishes to you & your husband. xx

There is a herbal product on the market called Broncho Stop that I take for troublesome coughs and it is magic! You might give that a try - I take the syrup and highly recommend it. Best of luck!

Thank you, I will look that up.

I always have a pack of those in my bag. They are very good. I try not to take then too often in case they affect other meds - they are also expensive!

Hi

I have Heart Failure and the dreaded Cough, it also generates quite a lot of flem. I don't take Ramapril so Heart Nurse just says Heart related cough !!

So what concerns me is, it can't be fixed so the Bronco Stop would need to be permanent !!

Regards

If you have heart failure and have a nasty cough, I'd recommend going to your GP. I hesitated to do so but when I did go the surgery I was diagnosed with pneumonia which is a BAD things for all of us cardiac wrecks.

Hi. Sorry i don't have anything i can add to help you out but can i ask you about your cough please. I had an ablation done last March for AF and although the AF has gone i am still after all this time still very tired, get very out of breath going up hill and my heart races , but the other thing i have found is i have a lot of fluid in my chest and throat. I am not so much coughing but constantly clearing my throat. I have high blood pressure and am on tablets for this but i put the excess fluid down to the high blood pressure, do you suffer with high BP or is it the heart failure that you think causes the cough. I don't have heart failure but although i am still under the cardiologist he doesn't seem to be listening to me about how annoying it is for me and my husband with me clearing my throat all the time, sometimes i feel like i am almost drowning!! Sorry this has turned into a long story but it was good to hear that a cough is 'a thing' and not just me.

Hi, well you are a lot braver than me, I was offered an Ablation 7 years ago but chickened out...mine does sound similar it is more clearing the throat than an actual cough, I have high blood pressure. ..tried a couple of blood pressure meds ....now on fursomide & candesartan. ...the throat clearing has only started recently so not a diagnosis, just me guessing...with you about cardiologist no faith in mine after she put me on Amiodarone when I was first diagnosed, then when I see her she just sends me for echocardiogram from which I get no information........ are you in the UK . Keep smiling...sending a big hug. Janxx

We do sound similar. I am in the uk, Hampshire hospitals. I have been on lisinopril for years and the cardiologist has put me on spironolactone (after seeing him 6th Dec, the doctor only just got the letter to add the spironolactone on friday and that was after me chasing it!) i mentioned to him about the fluid but apart from adding that tablet and saying he will see me in 6 months i feel like he is not listening about the problems going up hill and the fluid. My doctor isn't much better. It is all frustrating but i just keep thinking there are people worse of than me. I hope you manage to get sorted, the ablation wasn't as bad as i thought it would be if you ever do decide to have it done. Take care of yourself. Good to talk to you.

Hi Kelda, I suppose we are lucky to have the NHS ....but they are very long winded sometimes, I had a refrral to the rapid response clinic, it took 6 months...don't think I will go for the ablation now as I'm 77, keep going to your Doctor until you get sorted or is there another one in your practice you could change to.....as you say there are people worse off, but we are important too...let me know if (when) you get sorted.

Luckily my husband is fairly deaf so my coughing doesn't drive him mad. Chat anytime, Sending love jan

It's good to talk to someone who knows. I will let you know if i get to the bottom of it all but as i don't see cardiologist until June i guess i will be coughing for a while. Take care of yourself.

Hugs to you xx

Hello,

I am unfortunately having a problem with a cough too, something I have learned to live with since a pericardectomy nearly two years ago aged 73. Although my heart is much improved unfortunately I have developed pleural thickening which has created breathing problems too. Generally my cough is producing clear , thin phlegm but from time to time it does get infected and turns green ( sorry for the technicolour description) and in that case the GP prescribes a course of antibiotics. Worse when I get up and now I have a special inhaler which helps clear my lungs when needed. Generally I able to get a bit more exercise rate up over the last month of using the inhaler. Still my cough is a pain to my dear Wife I know, Broncostop as a liquid or the pastilles is wonderful to calm things down on a journey, etc. I do hope your cough improves, the heart meds can be a problem too but please take care about pleural fluids being an issue and don't hesitate to consult your GP. Best wishes!

Thank you for your response, every little bit of information can help in what seems like a battle...I will get a GP appointment to see if he can do anything to help. My husband just takes his hearing aid out when I get on his nerves......You take care of yourself.
