PLEASE HELP. Dad’s possibly risky surgery: cutting out part of the heart.

My dad has gone back into hospital with another episode of VT, he has had many episodes in hospital in the past 3 days so they tried an ablation yesterday. They couldn’t get to the scaring inside his heart which is causing the VT so had to stop the op. They want to look at options however, one of the options was to cut out part of his heart. This is so scary to hear as it is very risky and I would love to know if anyone has information.

Hello, I’m afraid I really don’t know but would suggest calling the BHF nurse helpline on Monday for more information. Their number is 0300 330 3322 and they’re open 9am to 5pm.

Best wishes to you and your dad.

Hi Louise

Only thing I can offer is that the Surgeon/ Cardiologist will have had a Very Very Carefully look at the Risk to your Dad and the Reward to doing the Op.

So if I was you and it was my Dad I would put my Trust in the Professionals Hands.

At the end of the day it's Only what's available to You.

Wish your Dad Well and You of Course

All of us on here who have had Open Heart By pass Surgery Have had their Heart Stopped and worked on !!! Pretty Routine Work to the Professionals

Best Regards

I think that this would cost the NHS a great deal of money, and they would not offer it unless they had considered the options and concluded that the cost/benefit and risk was OK.

Ask for the risks to evaluated in percentage terms so you can make an informed judgement. If they are looking at the options they should be able to come back with information on what their plans are and why they want to follow one particular route. Take notes and listen carefully, there can be a lot of information flying around.

You will need to ask where the part of the heart they want to get at is as some parts are very close to major arteries and the vagus nerve. It is hard to be calm and collected so take a few deep breaths before you go in and be prepared to ask questions. Take care. Ian
