Peanut Butter, good or bad?

I seem to remember reading a report a while back that peanut butter was not good, but can't find anything now. It makes a good snack on my whole plant based diet, which I am almost on.

In Thailand it is very expensive, so had a go at making it myself, pretty easy, but messy to clean up and about 1/3rd price. But then I know what is in it.

Maybe it was just about the salt and sugar, which is not a problem for me, but I thought there was something else. I seem to remember it was fattening, due to the process???

Peanut butter is a healthy food but, as with everything, in moderation as even too much of a good thing is not good.

There are diets forums on HU that would probably be of interest to you. Also, as you've shown a keen interest in cholesterol there's also a cholesterol forum that could also be of interest.

I disagree Lezzers, I think there are healthier nut options. For example, almond or Brazil nuts.

Not sure Brazil nuts makes very good peanut butter! Roasted almonds are quite nice though.

in reply toLezzers

I disagree, I think they do.

Peanut butter and nuts in general are good. The only problem is that they are VERY fattening. I have jar of peanut butter, and on the jar it says per 100 grams it is 611 calories. I have to seriously restrict myself, which with peanut butter is very difficult.

I am sorry to say but that is great news, my body fat has all but disappeared, so from that point of view no problem for a stick insect.

I do prefer the home made stuff when I am not too lazy to make it and may try some of the other nuts too. Including brazils which aren't...nuts.

Oh 🤭

However.... the plot thickens.

Thanks for the link, very interesting and is exactly my diet with the occasional bit of chocolate thrown in (lifes for living, isn't it?)I'm not really a lover of broccoli but do eat it quite a lot, it's usually the first thing I'll eat off the plate to get it out of the way! 😂

in reply toLezzers

I disagree I love broccoli 🥦 plus it’s a superfood.

As a rule of thumb fats are 9 calories per gram, carbs and proteins are 4.

We buy a peanut butter that is 100% peanuts, nothing added. Peanut butter and banana on toast mmmmm!!

Omega 3 fats are good for you and omega 6 fats are bad.

Peanut butter consists of 100% omega 6 fatty acid and as such should only be eaten occasionally.

I knew there was something there, thanks.

I think that depends on your point on view, both have their place in a balanced diet.

That link recommends healthy fats from various sources including nuts.

Peanuts are not a nut they are a legume consisting of unhealthy omega 6 fatty acid and should be eaten in moderation.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply tofergusthegreat

Yes you're quite right a peanut is a legume, as are brazils, walnuts, chick peas, beans etc. Very healthy low fat food. But my original link from the BHF site was to show that omega 3 & 6 both play an important part in a balanced diet.

Milkfairy profile image
MilkfairyHeart Star in reply toLezzers

Also omega 9

fergusthegreat profile image
fergusthegreat in reply toLezzers

I think you are just an argumentative person who cannot accept when they are wrong.

All the foods listed above contain a balanced variety of dietary fats whereas peanut butter is 100% omega 6 which should be limited in the diet

How rude!!

I would hope this is a forum for the support of all heart patients .

To have the opportunity to discuss issues in a open supportive way without making judgements.

Sorry but walnuts like hazelnuts and almonds are true "tree" nuts. Brazil nuts are actually seeds you get over a dozen in one fruit.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toMichaelJH

Really really??? Hmmm OK I also bow to your better knowledge but I'll look into it further 😂

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply tofergusthegreat

So packs of peanuts should really say "Contains legumes"!

Balance is very important, I am a very balanced person, I dribble out of both side of my mouth at the same time. How many on this forum can say that!!!?

Home made cashew nut butter is lovely. I love the M & S bags of luxury nuts but must admit one handful seems to lead to another. Peanut butter and banana, yum and avocados are now one of my favourites lovely on toast (no butter or spread) with a poached egg on top.

Yesterday I had a nutrition tip pop up on my fitbit...avocado, nuts & olive oil are a great source of healthy fats but should be limited to 5/6 teaspoons a day. Im probably over indulging & love avocado eggs for brekki and a nut & rasin snack in the evening 🤦🏽‍♀️
