I was diagnosed with af also what hospital personal considered low although even heart rate I have always had lowish heart rate in mid forties. but hospital said it should be at least 60 at your age I am 74 Never had pain breathlessness or discomfort. Went up Ben Nevis on 62 birthday Did further 13 Munroes (Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet) without trouble. Also I have run two marathons in past. 3 hours 40 seconds being best time in my late forties But I was told I was at risk of sudden death because of low heart rate. They therefore put By ventricular pacemaker in. (three leads) Felt ill, dizzy. for week. Went for check up to pacemaker clinic for a fixed appointment. I told them how I felt so they switched it down to match previous natural HB of 45 So back to original rhythm. It had been set at 50. Why? when the told me it should be at least 60 at my age and then subsequently back to 45 That's what I was told. Felt better. Some time later had a bit of chest stomach pain. Because of their warning rang 111 they sent ambulance, on arrival they checked pacemaker they told me it is SWITCHED OF MR C. its not working they said Pacemaker not working with great emphasis. They could find nothing wrong with me, other than AF so probably indigestion but never the less they insisted and took me to AE for check up. Nobody in AE looked at pacemaker just observed me for 4 hours then said I could go. I later Contacted consultant I told him what para medics had said. There was a short silence he then said "the middle lead had probably switched itself of to save battery power??" I did not go any further with Question. they subsequently did cardio version which has since reverted so back in AF but do not feel in any way discomforted. This was last October I still do not know whether pacemaker is on or off but heart rate is now in high 70 all the time. I have just had hip replacement two weeks ago nothing was said about pacemaker with regard to hip op. I am walking out with one stick with very little pain. I haven't a clue what is going on with my ridiculous high heart rate
