Hey, I would probably ask your doctor but I have a titanium replacement aortic heart valve and I lift heavy at the gym and I have had no problems when lifting .

Wow that's good. You must be young! I just worry it puts stress on the heart. Thanks for reply.

Did you ask him if it is OK. My gym want written doctors clearence after heart attack for instance. Best to check with your GP or cardiologist and your gym rules.

Ask them straight. Can I lift weights in a gym? Yes or No. Sometimes they talk a lot because they don't like to answer. Ask for a straight answer.

Hi Carol,

I have a leaking mitral valve and lift weights regularly at the gym. (This isn't what caused it)

Do you have any symptoms currently?

If you're wanting to exercise, I think going to the gym is a good idea because you are not isolating yourself such as road running. Personally, I know being surrounded by people and health professionals makes me feel reasurred when I go to the gym.

In terms of lifting weights, you will know your own limit and just make sure you listen to your body. If you are sensible then I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

Of course, make sure you check with your cardiologist first.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for your reply. It's just that i have always exercised. Running, swimming, weights etc and feel i dont deserve this as have always looked after myself. The doctor said it may be congenital but he dosnt know. I get periodic bad palpatations and then none at all. I love ecercise and would be depressed to stop. Carol
