It really depends on how long it has been since your surgery. AT six months, there are still small groans from my chest when I try and do too much - the last one just yesterday when trying to close up a very tight mole grip. As said often here - your body will let you know what you will be able to do. There are more meaningful exercises to do rather than press ups, but try it and if you get a pain, don't do any more.

From what I have been told, it seemed recommended not to do anything that would cause immediate stress such as weight lifting and things like that which I imagine would probably include push ups, pull ups etc. It may worth asking about the viability of swimming as this would potentially improve your cardio and stamina with minimal stress on the body as you are supported by water. You can make swimming as easy or intense as you feel you are able to or are permitted to. The only issue is heart rate monitors do not work in chlorinated water but you can time your pulse for 6 seconds then multiply by 10 to get a rough idea.
