The main cause of angina is narrowed arteries causing a lack of blood and oxygen. The petscribed medication is to try and prevent further plaque buildup up, and to reduce the strain on the heart. Although somebody has had stents/ bypass they still have CVD. This means other arteries and even those treated may become comprised especially if lifestyle changes are not made.

The BHF have a downloadable booklet on angina which is worth reading.

What your GP is suggesting is the standard treatment for angina. As has been said below the beta-blocker lowers your blood pressure (so less work on your heart) and the statin reduces blood cholesterol and potential for further furring up your arteries. Usually you'd be given a GTN spray as well to deal swiftly with any angina pain you may have. So, relax, the GP is right
