Hello,

7 weeks ago, I underwent a quadruple heart graft and my recovery is ok however I am taking water tablets to reduce the amount of fluid in my lungs. The hospital thought it was better that i am discharged and recover at home.

I exercise a lot (walking and trying to get back to normal) but i am still unsure if i am getting any better.

What have you done to get over this? Can you provide me with some tips and tricks?

Hi Oadby

When I had my triple heart bypass in June, I put on a stone in weight. On discharge, everyone had to have an xray where they found I had water on the lung, due in no small part because I was unable to to inflate my lungs fully due to pain. I was immediately put on antibiotics and when I was reviewed at the family doctors, they sounded my chest and found I now had water in both of my lungs at the base of them. I was further prescribed water anti biotics. Once they ran their course, I was sent to the hospital I had the Op and was xray'd again to ensure the water had disipated, which it had.

Thats one issue

As I said I had put on a stone in weight and was explained to me it was because of the blood transfusions I had to have also the liquits whilst in ICU - My ankles and feet swelled up, could not get watch to do up and clothes well smaller. For that they prescribed water tablets that I took for about a month. Water retention is common and it is water tablets to assist in passing this excess.

Antibiotics for the fluid on the lung and water tablets for the water retention.

Please make an urgent appointment with your GP and mention triple heart bypass and I promise you, you will be seen today. You need urgent treatment, if what you say is true for the consequences could be pneumonia ......Hope this helps you my frienf

Hi Oadby. I also had a quad bypass and like you I had fluid on my lung for a long time. They did talk of draining the fluid at one stage but eventually discharged me without. I went back for regular x-rays and it showed improvement. Two years down the line and I'm running and swimming regularly without problems. I think time and regular exercise is the key. Good luck with the recovery

Hi there

I had an AVR and a bypass in April and had trouble with the fluid on my lungs after op,a gurgling sensation in your lungs and pain at the bottom of ribs in my back but now 5 months on it’ finally feels lke my lungs are functioning normally again well almost as I get a little flutter now and then but I did need to sleep almost upright for along time also do your breathing exercises regularly

It could be though that you have more of a problem than that so best get it checked out with GP

Hope that helps and good luck with your recovery
