I was a competitive runner for many years but had a pacemaker fitted 10 days ago due to my low resting pulse of 30 beats per minute and exercise induced heart block whereby my maximun herat rate is only about 130. I have been told I can resume normal activities after about 6 weeks including running but I am still worried about giving it 100% effort. Would it be dangerous to push myself to the limit in future? I did a parkrun in 17.45 when I was 60 and I am now 61 so I was very fit for my age. Are there any other runners who can still run as fast as they did before having a pacemaker fitted?

Running with a pacemaker
I am in my late 60s. I used to run about 100k a week and do a parkrun every week. I am seriously impressed with your 5k time - the best I could manage was about 26 minutes.
In January I had a heart attack and had a ICD fitted. Since then my running speed has dropped considerably. I am trying as hard as I used to but my body just isn't playing ball. No one has said that I shouldn't push myself as hard as I used to. I built up gradually and I am now spending about the same amount of time exercising as before my heart attack, and enjoying it just as much - just a bit more slowly.
We're all different and I am sure you will reach the same heights as before. Just listen to your body and learn to adapt to your new physical situation. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
