Time for a wee rant! I know in the whole scheme of things this is really minor, and I know I should be grateful (and I truly am!) that I feel well and I’m able to lead a normal life..... but .... why can’t I lose bloody weight???? I’m currently on a low carb diet, I walk between 4to 5 miles a day with my job, I have a small amount of alcohol on a weekend and nothing’s happening! Feeling so frustrated! That’s it rant over ! Thank you ! 😩

Hi,

You don’t say what your medical condition is, I assume it’s heart related and you’ve been doing told to do moderate excercise. Unfortunately moderate excercise is not enough to lose weight. It’s good for a broken heart but you need to control your diet to lose weight.

It’s been a long time since I really made my heart work and gasp for breath. I miss those times.

I’ve got Dilated Cardiomyopathy Howard, I have an appointment at the gym to start a programme for moderate cardio exercise, I’m just worried I won’t be able to maintain going to the gym a few nights a week as I’m literally on my feet from 6 am until I get home on an evening , I’m still going to give it a go tho! I’ve heard the beta blockers can inhibit wait loss? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi

It is extraordinarily difficult to lose weight by exercise alone - you need to exercise regularly at a very high intensity to lose weight. You need to walk for an hour to burn 200 calories for example so if one eats just 500 calories in excess of what’s needed then you have a long walk each day just stop gaining!

Excluding medical conditions it really does come down to the amount of calories you put in. Exercise clearly has a heap of benefits but is not a diet!

I already walk on average between 4 and 5 miles a day, and I’m shattered by the time I get home, and I don’t think I could eat any healthier if I tried 😂, think it’s just going to be a matter of time hopefully , keep your fingers crossed 🤞

Hi. I have followed a vegan diet for the past 7 years but tended to fill up with lots of carbs! Following my heart attack last June I decided to follow a strict vegan diet I call it vegan with a vengeance!! It’s the American cardiologist Caldwell Esselstyn who advocates no oils. I started following that and have lost 35kgs (5.5 stone in old money). I also did cardiac rehab and continue with gym work and walking daily. I have to take vitamin B12 and monitor my calcium intake. I feel better and healthier although my eating is not exciting!! I take each day as it comes and focus on that day and if I indulge one day I pick it up the next day. What has also helped has been I use my Fitbit to monitor my intake and output. So if have a bad day when I feel unwell or am just being idle then I reduce my calories intake to balance it out. Hope this helps as having been overwhelmed initially I tried to put my health fears to a positive outcome. Hope all goes well for you. Happy to help in anyway I can. Zena

Thanks Zena! Much appreciated! I know for a fact I couldn’t become vegan, although I take my hat off to those who are and enjoy it, I dot eat a lot of red meat but o do love chicken and fish. I know I’ve moaned about my weight gain but I’ve only gained 7lb , which I know isn’t a lot, but I want to be aware before it gets out of hand! So pleased you’re feeling fit and healthy, in finding a lot of it is down to a positive mental attitude x
