Exercise and ARVC

I've recently been diagnosed with ARVC and saw the cardio nurse last week. I will be seeing the consultant end of June (over a year after the seizure that started the process!). She told me that this condition actually responds badly to exercise, that is exercise could make it worse. Does anyone have experience of this? I cycle everywhere, run regularly and do 2 or 3 exercise classes a week. Should I stop? Certainly don't want to!

Hi phantom-

If you have been diagnosed with ARVC, it may have been brought up at the time of your diagnosis, but if not it is best to discuss your exercise regime with your cardiologist before undertaking frequent exercise.

If you would like to speak with one of our genetics nurses for more information on ARVC please call 0330 330 3311.

Best of luck,

Ashleigh

Hi Phantom. I have a bit of experience with this. Was running lots for about 10 years and one day it triggered VT and cardiac arrest. I now have an ICD and have stopped running, but found even more pleasure swimming, gentle cycling, weights, yoga, skateboarding, walking and spending more time with my family. A blessing in disguise as I’m trying new things but tough at the beginning especially as advice from docs is vague. I hope you find your safe routine soon, even running’s not worth getting defibrillated!

Hi, I'm in a similar situation to yours, had an ICD fitted, have stopped running but want to carry on with cycling and some gym work while keeping my maximum heart rate within acceptable levels. How did your situation pan out?
