I had a pacemaker fitted last year, completely out of the blue, total heart block, I am struggling a bit to come to terms with it. Has anybody else felt this???
I am 63 thought I was very fit, Pilates teacher, Tango and Ballet dancer, feel a bit like 'who dropped the bomb'. I am a bit obsessed with my fit bit and heartbeat.

I too got the 'bombshell' diagnosis last August. I'm 53, tend to think of myself as healthy and quite fit. Have always been active, 20 hours of gym a week on average.
I had a pacemaker fitted for sick sinus syndrome, and since have found it difficult to come to terms with. I've found it hard making adjustments to my lifestyle and feel pretty low about the whole thing. I understand that there are people so mych worse off.
Apparently low mood, anxiety and depression can be quite common after such incidents.
Have you a cardiac nurse or have you talked to BHF for support?
I am 66. Despite being a 100k a week runner and very fit, I had a heart attack and cardiac arrest in January, and, like you, have had a pacemaker fitted. I certainly suffered from low mood and frustration at not being able to exercise like I used to.
But I cannot praise the NHS and BHF enough for their patient support. Have you enrolled on the cardiac rehab course? It has built up my confidence enough for me to start exercising again, and I feel so much better for it.
Just believe that there is life after cardiac problems. It can and will get better. Good luck in your recovery.
Hi, I have just come across your post and am in a similar position that you were in I am 64 and had a couple of dizzy turns and following some tests a 24hr ecg picked up heart pauses which turned out to be 2nd degree heart block and like you had upto that point been healthy. I am certainly struggling with having a pacemaker and obsessed with my heart rate.
Have you overcome that feeling yet? Do you know how your PM is performing ? I had my first PM clinic last week and was told that my PM is doing1% of the work and my heart 99% .
Did they investigate your heart after your block or did they just accept that it was isolated to just heart block.
Hi I’ve just read your post and I had a my check up last week at the pm clinic, apparently everything is fine and I don’t need to see them until next year now, even though I mentioned that I have recently been feeling palpitations and tired and also worried about exercise. I had type 1&2 heart blocks which they said is brachycardia. Also I don’t sleep well at all and have recently been waking up with a dull headache, not sure if this is significant but nevertheless it’s worrying. I had my pm fitted in April and it’s still relatively uncomfortable but slowly I’m getting used to it being there.
