My girlfriend has herpes, is unprotected sex A LOT more risky than using a condom?

She was told at a sexual health clinic that the risk of me being infected would largely increase if we had unprotected sex, but when I asked a doctor recently, they said the risk was only slightly higher. Which one is it?

Herpes is transmitted by skin to skin contact, and wearing a condom may not give you full protection. The risk is higher when sores are present, these can include symptoms like tingling and itching and during this time sex should be advoided. However herpes can be transmitted even when there are not symptoms. Either way you look at it there is an increased risk and it's maybe best to keep it wrapped.

I think this is correct, I was at a GUM clinic yesterday and asked the doctor a similar question. He said condoms were quite effective against herpes even though you can contract it even using them he said you would be quite unlucky to do so. His estimated was 19 people out of 20 would not get herpes when using a condom. So I would advise using one.
