Travel sickness

Does anyone have any tips for travel sickness. We live in a little village which is great for pram days, park days and beach days so super lucky. When they were babies we used to drive to see my Mum on a regular basis in the hospice, have food and come home....45mins each way. We haven't been too far for a little while but every time we try I get put off dues to cleaning up sick and obviously the kids get upset too. I bought the little wrists bands but they didn't seem to work. Tried windows down, empty stomach, nap times so they sleep which does help....if they actually sleep. What else can I try?! Help, its putting me off going anywhere. I've literally been scrubbing their car seat belts and they still smell of sick, everything can go in the washing machine but its terrible....we struggle some days to drive for 1 mile. Any tips for this also are welcome!xx

hi, are there any patterns to the sickness? Mine seems to get sick only in the mornings so I can only drive when she has an empty stomach or she is sick. Even a sip of water or a bite of a biscuit will make her sick, once her stomach is lined with food throughout the day is she better. The doc said to me to give her something to focus on or play with.. not sure if this helped. Also when I put her forward facing I think this helped but I don’t know how old yours are. My girl is 20 months now. I truely sympathise, it used fo stress me out every morning on the way to nursery. I felt I was always on edge waiting for her to vomit!

Thanks for your reply. It's definitely better if they have an empty stomach, they go longer without vomiting but it still comes and of course if you go out you can't starve them all day. I'm lucky that my nursery is just down the road on the way to work but heck that must be so stressful for you. Have you tried having a TV in the car or anything....I'm not an advocate for letting my little ones watch a screen but I'm willing to try anything. Our boys are 19months and we bought advance rear facing seats as our GP advised me to but I have though about them facing forward....I'm torn by what the GP said.😬xxx

a tv!! She’s already addicted to tv, it wouldn’t be a good move 😂. But she hasn’t been sick since I moved her seat round and she eats breakfast as soon as sets into nursery- But granted she is starving!. I know it’s better to have then rear facing, you need to decide what’s right for you. I have the joie 360 spin which does allow you to have them front facing after 15 months. I hope these guys will grow out if it soon - I also just bought a new car that’s automatic in case it’s my poor gear changes!!

Ha ha ha perhaps not then!😂 Mine aren't too interested in TV so far but thought it might be a distraction. Our seats spin too so think we'll try the forward facing, its either that or we don't go anywhere!!🤞🏻 Thank you.xx

Another one for forward facing seats. It's a decision to make on balancing up what is necessary. Dr and others involved in health and safety can only give advise based on official statistics and best practice. You have to take that on board, but you also have to be realistic and look at needs of your babies. And decide on balance between the likelihood of an accident and the reality of them being unwell everytime.

Thank you, I was saying the same yesterday when we got back and I was amongst cleaning up the carnage. I think I was just torn and felt I should fo the best for the boys....which is why we bought the extended seats but they're useless if we can't go anywhere and make memories!! Will give it a try next time and see how it goes.xx

Hi.

Long time 🙂

Hope you are all keeping well?

My LB is now 3 and he seems to be getting worse with longer car journeys. We’ve still got him rear racing, but like you, the dealing with sick when you are going somewhere or home isn’t fun!

Some kiddies who have reflux etc, don’t get on well with certain car seats as it puts their body in a crunched position.

If they are wrapped up with too many layers then they overheat in the car seat too.

if you can get hold of any, for the belts, I try a little concoction…in a pot..squirt of washing detergent, some dettol laundry cleanser fresh cotton and sprinkle in some bi carb powder, add a bit of water and then scrub it on the seat belts.

I’d then normally run an anti bac wipe up and down the belts to remove the excess as a last refresh. I hope that works for you…I left hubby to do that process last night, so see if the outcome is the same 🙂

Thank you, yes I made a concoction similar although the belts are still a bit white with the bicarb but at least they don't smell of sick!🤣 I'm swaying towards sitting them forward to see if it helps as I've tried the windows open etc which does help a little but still sick.xx
