Trehalose is an unproven supplement in that there have been no studies in people with ataxia taking orally ingested treahalose. What that means is that if you have talked to a doctor and decided to try it you will need to pick from among the "reasonable" limits that others have explored.

In one human clinical trial where people were asked to eat trehalose to try and improve vascular health the patients were given 100 g per day. The researchers noted that some people had trouble adjusting their diet because this is an increase of 400 calories.

I, personally, took 2 Tbs per day (one each in two cups of coffee) until recently. That is about 30-40 g or 120 to 160 calories. Recently I have switched to 2 rounded tsp of mannitol in one cup of coffee. Mannitol is only 1.6 calories per gram as compared to trehalose which is 4 calories per gram and based on the tiny bit of evidence I linked below plus the fact that the molecules of trehalose and mannitol are almost identical I am hoping that mannitol is continuing to aid in cleaning out mutant proteins from my brain and thereby helping to slow or delay the progression of my SCA1 but at the same time only costing me 16 calories a day:

I should note that mannitol is a diuretic and often causes loose bowels. Trehalose does the same, but to a lesser extent.

Short answer: Some people take a teaspoon a day and others take up to 4 Tbs a day. Personally I am switching to mannitol based on the real world reports of people with Parkinson's that are trying it and under the assumption that it is doing the same thing as trehalose in the brain. I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THIS HYPOTHESIS. My father and my aunt are both continuing to ingest 2 Tbs per day of trehalose.
