I want to go abroad on holiday but need a mobility scooter. Is it better to hire one or take your own? Can you take one on a plane easy?

My brother regularly hires a scooter when he goes on holiday abroad. He takes his own wheel chair with him of course and always finds the airport staff extremely helpful from point of arrival to point of departure. Either the hotel will rent scooters themselves or they will contact the hire firm that does.
It is easier to rent when you get to your destination, check with your holiday agent & make sure you are covered in the holiday insurance.

Forgot to mention. They also wheel him to the plane in his own wheelchair, use a lift to get him/wheelchair onto plane and same at destination.
I phoned my brother and asked if hotel hired out the scooters. Some do some don`t. The hotels that do not hire, usually telephone the scooter hire firm and they will bring one to the hotel.
Will have to see how bad I am. Bumole, I wish I knew x
Forget the plane, go on a cruise... perfect for less able-bodied people. I've found only one problem, you can't travel alone, have to be accompanied by someone who will act as your carer, however independant you may feel you are!
Try it ... you'll never go back to an airport.
I would love to go on a cruise but with teenage children it costs too much in August!! We should get extra DLA money instead !!! x
Good advice.I took a small portable one on holiday but it was not up to job and ran out of batteries going uphill.I wish I had rented but because we were self catering we thought it would be easier.It wasn't and found myself wanting my big road scooter for the bumps but it isn't portable. I think it depends what you like doing on holiday.We only went to Devon so I don't know about planes.When I last went on a plane a bout 6years ago I was still walking.
I would have thought for a plane you would need something that dismantles easily or I maybe wrong.I know that everyone at the airport is usually very kind and helpful.

I have been on a cruise and that was very good for disabled people.One of our local group regularly goes on cruises for ease but it was expensive and not our thing.We spend any available money on garden and eqiupment.I get tremors now so would find the various restraunts a challenge.
My children are teenagers so it costs a friggin bomb in August to go on a cruise!!!! Never mind!!!
All airlines all very different with taking power chairs. I.e. the weights, the s size and the type of battery installed. Lithium batteries seem to be the best for different types of airlines acceptance But you will need to contact your airline.
Hi ring a power chair on holiday is generally okay but it is limited to only a small amount of countries that do it I E the Canary Islands, Spain, USA ... You will also be limited by the battery with a higher chair as it will have been abused for some time by lots of customers so you will have no idea as to its performance
Hi personally i have always hired mobility scooters when abroad, i dont know what it is like when you take them on planes, inhave heard it is up to the individual airlines. I have never had any problems with hiring them abroad........................

Having been a teacher and mother to two teenagers I never again wanted to go on holiday at the end of July and August. A cruise would be too expensive but because we have a dog we are again restricted..Not many holiday places for Ataxia and dog.
Lots of hassle with equipment and documentation .Know the dilemma about the sun.
Did take the two teenagers to Tenerife but that was I was walking and driving before I was diagnosed about 6 years ago.
Like the idea of the floating wheelchair but the mind boggles.

I don't have a wheelchair (yet...) but I do remember this advice from my mother who does - and who also used to travel a lot.
Always telephone the airport and airline before travelling and warn them you will be arriving in a wheelchair. Apparently this makes a real difference, especially with the smaller airports.
