Random symptoms and new allergies??

I wondered if anyone has had anything similar to me as this year has been terrible and the doctors and nurses I have seen aren’t able to give much explanation. My symptoms consist of my chest becomeing really tight, it almost feels like the back of my throat is tight and my breath feels wheezier too however my inhaler doesn’t particularly help and my peak flow is normal or may drop the slightest bit. I have also found out I now have a lot of allergies - (pet dander, dust mites, trees, grass etc). It keeps occurring randomly and can last for ages - it’s majorly disrupting my life as it can become extremely uncomfortable as breathing hurts and it makes me panic - has anyone had anything similar to this ?? Thanks so much.

This post might be worth a read. It explains some of the overlaps and differences of asthma, anxiety and breathing pattern disorders - they can all have identical symptoms but asthma medications don't really help of it's not asthma. It's possible that some of what is going on isn't your asthma. Or even if it starts as that, it's maybe being exacerbated by your panicking (which is quite understandable as a reaction!)

This site is good for teaching relaxed breathing which might help at times if feeling constricted and times of panic because of those feelings.

No problem - it might not be that but sometimes it's helpful to just have an even possible answer!

You may want to see your asthma nurse to review your medications and ongoing symptoms. If it's asthma or anxiety, you should be supported by your GP/asthma nurse and suitable meds prescribed. AsthmaUK have further advice here: asthma.org.uk/advice/manage...

Thanks for your reply! I have the same allergies as you too I am already on fexofenadine they put me on that when this all began in February time! It has helped a little but has not made all the symptoms go away. I have had an asthma review and been referred to my local hospital who are just monitoring me.

bless you 🙁 I have been the same I haven’t been able to work since around July time due to it being so up and down but I’m going back soon. Yes please do - I will definitely start wearing a mask when cleaning for sure that’s a good idea! also how strange I am on the exact same medication as you. I don’t notice particularly that it makes me tired to be honest. Just wondering how you get on with montelukast I don’t think it makes much of a difference - do you notice much effect from it ? Take care of yourself too.

It must be hard being off work all that time. I'm hoping they will put me on Fostair 200 soon have they suggested that to you? The montenklast did work when I first had it few years ago, now I don't think so, I did stop taking it for abit, I've stopped again while on antibiotics and steroids can upset your asleep abit can't it? Do think what gp you get, on helpful they are luckily this week the gps been great I feel bad being off work as it is, got asthma review monday. Take care.

yes. I can relate to your experiences. There is something called Vocal Cord Dysfunction that is rarely considered when you see your GP or end up in A&E or on the ward. Normal asthma medications do not work and medical staff can become frustrated because it is often confused with asthma. It is little known in the medical world unfortunately, but there are a couple of consultants in the UK who have it as a special interest. It can happen to athletes so even being fit and strong doesn’t stop this breathing struggle! If you Google Vocal Cord Dysfunction there is a lot of information but make sure the sites are reputable and helpful. Dr Hull at The Royal Brompton Hospital in London has a special interest in it. He has changed my life.
