37 and only just been diagnosed as asthmatic.

About a year ago i went to my doctors with what i thought was a bad chest infection. I was told i was asthmatic depsite never having it before. A few weeks later i was in hospital after having breathing difficulties. Came out and back in again a few weeks later. No hospital addmissions since. I am constantly congested, coughing up Phlegm ever since and no amount of asthma medication seems to alleviate this cough. My consulatant says that it is just a part of asthma. However, other people i know who have asthma don't suffer this constant cough. Anybody else get this from their asthma?

Hiya, I developed asthma last year at the age of 25 and although all my inhalers helped the wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness I had a terrible cough for ages. Eventually my consultant put me on montelukast and it went completely within a couple of days. I'm not sure what your consultant has tried but if you feel not controlled do go back to see your doctor, I had lots of visits before it was conrtrolled its just a case of finding the right medication. Good luck!

Perhaps you should pin your consultant down on whether asthma is your only diagnosis. As far as I know, excessive mucus production is not a normal symptom of asthma, though it does feature in COPDs such as bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis. You would of course expect to get some residual congestion after a chest infection, but a year is a very long time

If your lungs are continually clogged with mucus, you run the risk of permanent lung damage. Have you had a CT scan?
