nebbed steroids
My cons or my old cons has always said that a puffer of steroid is the same as nebulised? Is this something other people have heard? or is it just my useless consultant? Cause surely if nebbed ventolin works better for me then the nebbed steroids should? Cause surely the nebbed steroids will hit my lungs and i could reduce the pred? Or is this my confuzzled head?
Nutty I neb pulmicort 2 mg twice a day and yes it does help but it is nasty can not get it in eyes, rinse mouth straight away, kills voice etc but hey anything worth a go. It is very expensive £300 a month

Not at all disagreeing with what the others say, but yes I have also heard that. I was going to be swapped to nebbed steroids if i ever got very low to save me from more side effects, however new guys have all said no different to taking a few more puffs of an inhaler. It seems to go along the same route as the neb/spacer ventolin argument if you see what I mean? If they run out of/lose my inhaler I seem to get swapped to nebbed in hospital.
I should probably add to that the consultant who suggested nebbed sterois was private and used to tell my gp what to prescribe on the NHS, ie it didn't come out of his budget, so possibly that backs up Bowmei's theory?

I have tried nebbed Pulmicort over 10 years ago and nebbed Flixotide 6 years ago - I understand that then, Flixotide nebs were around £60 for 10!!! I stick to the MDIs now and have also just got an add on flixotide inhaler for being able to up the inhaled steroid component as I use seretide etc.
I use loads of Ventolin nebbed and have had Anti biotics nebbed (Gentamicin) in the past.

Nutty et al, yep I was majorly neb festing before Christmas and did a month or two of nebbed Gentamicin for Pseudo infection, and then had Flixotide nebs added too because Pred wasnt doing it and I was literally drowning in my own lung fluids! I ruined one machine with the anti bs and found the Flixotide very time consuming.
I have still got them to use as I am now sssh off Pred, but am coping on the full whack double dosing of the Seretide 500.
I havent had the cost of steroid nebs mentioned, I did look them up but they werent that pricey compared with some of the other meds we all use. £1 per Spiriva capsule, omeprezole is £2 a day, Imigran about £10 a pill need I go on....
Nebbed Tobi (Tobramycin) is the mega costly one here in the UK. I am not even sure about it's licence for Pseudo as it is so expensive. I was just lucky that Gentamicin worked.
Given the choice, I would rather neb rather than swallow (!), and my Con agrees luckily. Local hell hole reckoned I should be trying to use puffers. And look where they got me before Christmas...MRSA infection included in that one! Would be using one a day then at this rate!

I used to be on nebulised Pulmicort 2mg twice a day. It helped but problem was it took 20 mins twice a day to do. I am now on Symmbicort (pulmicort and something else {mind gone blank}) 4 puffs 4 times a day.
Pulmicort is available from your G.Ps on prescription and if you are planning on nebulising it you must have a nebuliser that will nebulise steroids. A standard nebuliser won't do. Pulmicort is oil based unlike ventolin and atrovent which are water based and requires more ltr per min to nebulise into a mist.

I'm on Pulmicort 1mg nebs twice a day at the moment - my consultant seems to swear by them when the lungs are playing up - I certainly do find them better than using an inhaler through a spacer. I do tend to only use them when I'm on nebs rather than inhalers anyway though as I'm not managing inhalers well at the moment. It does take time to neb (especially when you're having to neb salbutamol first 
) and despite rinsing my mouth out I still get oral thrush continually when using them but I find it's worth it. Hope that's helpful to you !
hello i neb atrovent was on it four x aday 500/2ml then but dowto 2x and inhaler for the other 2 doses until inhaler run out so 2day i just nebbed 2 x but chest is not happy so i will phone gp to see what she things of nebbing 4 x again then when chest feels better down to 3 x's. I need to phone her 2morrow anyway as still coughing green afer 2 different lots of antib's. I'm now on250/1ml atrovent
I also neb ventolin when inhaler is not working. Not done steroids or antib's though neb yet.

I neb a mixture of atrovent and salbutamol between 2 and 4 times a day. This is part of my standard daily treatment rather than being just when I need it.

Hi there! Wow, that is a lot of meds - and to just think that I was once in the same position of trying to find the right combination of different medications which left me on at least 5 different medications at any given time. Thank goodness those days are behind me and I hope they never return! Steroids totally blew my immune system (I mean to a crippling low). I have since been prescribed one product for maintenance and of course a rescue inhaler for my asthma. I also have been prescribed a nasal spray for sinusitis and a pill for allergy related asthma. I usually avoid taking the nasal and allergy meds by just steering clear of the triggers. I have even (up until recently) been able to forget to take my maintenance medication and reduced my rescue inhaler use. I found that combining my conventional medical treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine has had dramatic affects on my asthma without side affects or the need for extra medications. I must admit that there are extenuating circumstances at present that are preventing me from continuing this way but, I will surely continue with the TCM regimen once I am again able to do so. I neb salbutamol and atrovent 4 times daily, hypertonic saline 2-4 times daily and TOBI nebs will be starting on tuesday- for a new bug i grew in my last culture.
