ive been on prednisalone ec now for 7 years my maintenace dose is 10mg however over the last year ive not managed to get it below 20mg as i soon have a flare up and require iv hydrocortisone..
Just wondering if anyone else is on longterm pred and what is your maintenance dose?

Hi, although the aim is to get me down to 15mg, in reality my maintenance dose is 17.5mg and has been for a few years now.
Mine is 15mg but after my heart Bypass in Jan, my asthma has improved dramatically and my Consultant wants to get it down to 12mg reducing by qmg every 4 weeks,
thanx for your replys it looks like maybe 20mg is going to be the norm for me.. from now on!
At least i dont have many side effects from them i seem to get spotty on high doses and hydro and fluid retention not so much a gain in weight from the munchies as that dont really effect me.. oh and the lovely mood swings ..

I don,t really have a maintenance dose. It gets reduced very slowly when I'm 'well' 0.5 mg or less a month at very low doses and increases drastically when I deteriorate. It was down to 1mg in January but is 40 just now. I hate to think how long reducing that will take. It took a year to get from 5mg to 1. I didnt have a bad spell that year. I usually need antibiotics as well. Pred rarely seems to work by itself. Not sure if insomnia is hypoxia or Prednisolone. It usually lets me sleep but 40 is high for me.
Ps been on Prednisolone since 2001 I think. Seem to tolerate it fairly well but the low salt diet is a pain. Beats being unable to put on my shoes though.
I get a bone scan every couple of years and they are not too bad so far. Mind you I had to request it his year - the local hospital had stopped sending reminders.

My maintainence dose is 30 mg but am currently on 40 mg . Haven't been below 25mg for about 6 yrs now and not lower than 12 mg in 11 yrs.I have bi- annual dexa scans and last one wasnt good despite being on alendronic acid and adcal d3(calcium) so something about some iv meds are being discussed now - am waiting to hear.
