Hi brooke12,

I'm not a smoker but would think 8 days without then smoking 10 is not the end of the world (I have friends who smoke 40 a day) so back on the wagon and no guilt feelings.

How serious is your illness that you can't tell your son? He might surprise you and he would be more support for you, anyway best of luck!

Hi Brooke...I have mild Copd..and stopped smoking 8 weeks ago with the help of an ecig..mite not be everyones way to do it..but its working for me..never managed a week without cigs before! Dont be too hard on yourself..its a very difficult thing to do break the nicotine habit...took me 30 years! Xx

We try, we slip, we try again. I stopped smoking about 10 times and restarted 9 times; but you only have to stop one more time than you restart and you have cracked it! I smoked 50 a day and have been smoke free for 7 years now. Keep trying. See your GP and ask for a referral to a smoking cessation clinic. Get all the help you can. It is very, very hard but you can do it. Because your life depends on it.

Hi Brooke, You are not alone, we are all here to support each other. We have all had a blip with the smoking too. You need to make another date to quit and start again. Firstly you need to start thinking positive, there is help, yes for anxiety and depression too. On monday phone the helpline and speak to one of the nurses, they are brilliant. Write down all your questions. Are you newly diagnosed? Have you been asked about pulmonary rehab? If not then ask your gp or respiratory nurse to refer you. You will learn how to manage your condition, and meet people in the same position. Once you have some knowledge of your condition, then sit down and talk to your son, explain that you may need help, but that you are going to do your best to help yourself. Also join a breathe easy group if you can. Again it brings you into contact with others where you can talk and share your experiences, and feel less alone. Please try again to quit smoking, it wont cure you, but will slow the progress. Take care, thinking of you.

ingrid.

Just do what you can and don't punish yourself for what you can't.... I have smoked since 14 and I have managed to give up for the majority of the time but sometimes if I feel really low I might have one.... I do feel bad after but the fact I can go a week without makes me feel more positive.... And you have gone 8 days so well done ... Keep on trying and feel positive for each one you don't have! I have mild-moderate copd... What condition and stage are you at brooke12? Heather

I only stopped 5 weeks ago and I smoked for 60 years. Try the Electric cigs. You are still getting the nicotine that the body craves but not the other poisons in real cigarettes especially carbon monoxide. It took me many attempts so don't give up. You know you can do it if you managed 8 days without. Just keep on trying. Best wishes, Marina x

I only stopped 8 weeks ago after 45 years on and off. My Doctor really frightened me and that did the trick. I am using the inhalator and find I only need 1 or 2 per day now and some days none. I find that since I was only dignosed ,finally 2 weeks ago (with COPD and Bronchiectasis) I get depressed and anxious and this makes me feel that I want to smoke or cry or both.

We will do it with a bit of help from each other.

I know how you feel Brooke, it's so difficult to give up the ciggies.

Try not to feel too bad, draw a line under the lapse and start giving up again.

I stopped for six months, then my mum ( who has copd), was really ill and on impulse I bought ten cigs, how daft is that? I am intending to stop again on Monday. I am skint so can't afford any after that.

Good luck

Val

Don't beat yourself up. It is very hard to stop. I tried and failed so many times, then I did it.

Best thing I have done.

What they say is true, "don't give up giving up"

Lynne xx

I'd stopped for quite a while, but re-started when my husband died. Something I did initially was take it hour at a time - not a day, but an hour. Any time I felt like a ciggie, I'd go and do something - anything - until I was no longer having that craving. I didn't use any nicotine replacements, just will-power.

Don't beat yourself up about any lapses, all that does is make you reach for the packet, which in turn lowers your self-esteem and your resolve to give them up.

Good luck with kicking that habit

I stopped 6 weeks ago with the help of every aid on the market!! and the intention of weaning myself off them slowly. I had a check up at the copd clinic this week and was so happy because I could do so much more without getting to breathless. I was very dissapointed to find that my stats had gone worse. Oh well at least I feel better. Just try again and one day you will win the war against the weed. Good luck x

I quit 15 years ago was off them 4 1/2 years then started smoking again. Don't ask why I don't know. I was diagnosed with copd 3 years ago since March I stopped smoking two days later using nicotine mints I'm still using the mints but haven't smoked. So don't be hard on your self. You can do it and you will do it when your ready.
