Just thought I would tell you all about my experience with my local gym.
I was reffered to the gym after I had finished a PR course by the resparatory team.
At the start of my 14 week low cost trial (arranged by the team) they measured my breathing, weight, blood presure, heart rate and waist measurement. They then worked out a program to suit my conditions (COPD, Bronchiectasis and Arthritis all mild) I then started going for an hour 3 times a week. Yesterday they called me in for my 7 week check and the improvement of all the measurements amazed them, especially the breathing. The fev reading was so good it would only just be classed as COPD.
I feel so much better myself and find the mucus is a lot looser. So if you are lucky enough to be reffered after your PR I would definitely say. GO FOR IT.
Keep moving, luv PT xxx

Thats great news PT! Glad you got such good results - you must be feeling so much better in yourself too. Hope you complete the entire course and then keep up your fitness levels by arranging your own exercise routine whether at a gym or working out at home. I love that you have shared your good news on the forum - it really helps to get others exercising too if they can have faith that it really will show a definite improvement. Having mild lung problems makes it even more impressive that you are willing to make the effort, as sadly many people in the mild / moderate stages don't bother. They reason that they will not be much affected by things and then have a rude awakening later on, as even in mild and moderate COPD there is gradual muscle loss if you are not keeping active. Well done you PT, and long may you stay healthy
I had a full work out especially designed for me by the PR team but here it is roughly. First 10 mins on sit down bike then warm up exercises. Then 10 mins treadmill followed by 10 mins cross trainer (a killer) then 10 mins on upright bike. I then use a pilates band to do some upper body exercises whilst sitting on a big ball followed by some bisep curls using a weight. Then back to the sit down bike and finally the cool down exercises. All the equipment is set quite low at the moment but I can increase it when I feel ready. I only get a little breathless (as everyone in the gym should) and stop if I need to and rest. It all takes approx 80mins. Keep moving PTxx
Glad the gym helped you Pt and better results too. My gym experience wasn't too good but at least my results were still the same at the end so no deterioration, just a muscle problem which could happen to anyone I hope to go back soon but have to wait for physio outcome. It's a shame there are noot more ongoing gyms to help long term illness suffers as meeting other sufferers is good for moral too don't you think??
Most of the long term illness sufferers in my gym are heart problem people. The gym said that they don't get many lung patients because some time ago the funding for us was stopped as it had been reported that no remarked improvement had been noticed. My PR team has to fight for every place! That is why I want to shout about my results so that they change their minds.I miss the friends I made on the PR course and wish they were here with me.
Hi Pt my gym is much the same, more heart patients than lung . But for us eventually the heart may be affected so the exercise could be beneficial by way laying deterioration. So keep on shouting I'll back you all the way. This is about ongoing health maintenance.
I think we need to SHOUT a bit more about everything about these "other lung diseases", Everyone has heard about Lung Cancer but you mention any other of the multiple things that people on this site have to endure and they have never heard of it. Every time anyone asks me to support our local Roy Castle charity I say yes OK, but when are you going to realise that there are other lung problems which need money to help find a cure or at least better treatment. rant over... PTx
Yes sad to say you are right PT, there are hundreds of charities for cancer, and cancer takes priority over all else in government & health care. While many other just as serious and disabling illnesses go unrecognised. Not to undermine the severity of cancer however there are many treatments and cures already available , within a month of diagnosis in most cases, while many lung sufferers struggle to get a clear diagnosis for long periods of time and often have to complain to get that far. Most lung diseases are life shortening, disabling and chronic but most people seem unaware of the reduction in quality of life that these illnesses cause. Even medics place more priority on cancer, that's my opinion and according to evidence of patients is the norm.
I have been for years now. Becky, the instructor, just says hi! now!Sometimes she gives me a big hug! The there's Glenn who shows some really difficult exercise like jumping on a set of steps all pile up high. I just love it. I even do some Qigong (the 8 pieces of brocade) and some lung exercise at home>>>
