went into hospital with severe chest infection heart rate was 150 and couldnt get my breath .yes it was a blood gases they took .they can only get a rading with an injection in your wrist . You have to have it done by a doctor cant be done by a nurse taking blood

Hi

Taking your oxygen levels by blood test is the most accurate way - the readings taken by the thing on your finger are Ok for monitoring at home etc or in hospital.

Are you on oxygen at home now?

FEV readings are different from the oxygen level readings.

Why don't you call us on the Helpline tomorrow - 03000 030 555 - and speak to one of the nurses. Don't sit at home worrying and remember your test results etc are individual to you, don't compare yourself with others on here.

Regards

Mark

My FEV1 is 26% as well. Arterial blood gas 83% as well. On the finger reader it's about 88-90%. I'm on 1/2 litre per minute oxygen for 15/24. Apart from that and getting short of breath I'm ok. :)

my finger reading is usually 96 so i cant understand why my breathing is so bad also bending down makes me extremely breathless and light headed also get palpatations .

in reply tojennamandy

Think its more to do with damage and when you move about body demands more oxegen than you can proses

But that don't explane breathless at rest ?

im ok at rest sometimes i get short of breath when just resting though not always

Blood tests for oxygen have to be done at the hospital.

Breathlessness and oxygen levels are two different things. You can be breathless but your oxygen levels are OK.

Having a severe infection will affect your oxygen levels - once infection has been treated your oxygen levels return to "normal".

Do you have any other conditions other than COPD? Still think you should call us tomorrow so we can help clarify things for you.
