what was the number % ? I've just gone from 118 to a mere 110 yrs lung age, I feel rejuvinated lol! I'm severe and I think you might be moderate not sure though, do you smoke Dave,if you stop you will slow down the progress.Exercise is good and eating a good diet helps, take care,Carol

hi carol the fev1 /fvc ratio of 51 % but dont understan what this all means was just told i had empysema and bronchitis i hve suffered asthma for 30yrs id never heard of copd

i do smoke and im trying to give up but finding it hard my lungs feel like i have 2 bricks in my chest and i struggle to exercise with the arthritis in my hips ive gonefrom being a ref and very fit to pretty much useless in 2 yrs but thats what happens when you smoke only self to blame but i will try hhard to give up lol

FEV1 at 51% would put you at the moderate stage. Check it out here - copd.about.com/od/copdbasic...

If you continue to smoke the decline will continue faster than if you stop. You know it makes sense! Good luck. ;)

Doctor said smoking with this was suicide

Aw come on Dave! If you have been fit once you can do it again, can't you? every body system will benefit from stopping smoking and every body system will benefit from exercise. Joints, when calm, will be much better from exercise, as will lungs and heart. So if you want to feel better, the get moving, make a determination, bin the fags, get yourself an exercise referral from GP or practice nurse and get to it. AND smile

You really have a choice Dave. Emphysema is progressive. I have Emphysema, very severe, and use oxygen for mobility. Two choice my friend. Smoke and join my on oxygen in just a very few years. Or stop smoking and perhaps have to use oxygen in decades. The choice as usual is up to you. But - you know it makes sense to quit. If only for your loved ones.:-)

From what I understand - and I may not be 100% accurate but what I have found out is that the diagnosis itself is based on the FEV1/FVC ratio which they say if below 70%, is indicative of COPD. However, because we are all slightly different, when your spirometry is done, you have an individual predictive value which may be higher than the 70%.

But you will also find some places say the FEV1/FVC ratio should be around 80%, it does depend on where you look but really, you do need your individual predicted figures to get an accurate interpretation and diagnosis.

If your FEV1/FVC ratio is indicative of COPD, they then base the stage you are at by your FEV1. eg; below 80% is said to be moderate COPD.

If you got a copy of your spirometry print out from your GP, BLF helpline will interpret it for you.

I got my FEV1/FVC ratio the other day at 78% so on the face of it, I do not have COPD and I have not yet got all the information but I was told by my GP that I may or may not have COPD as it was a bit low (I assume based on my individual predicted values).

Yes i agree with what you have said here. I have to do spirometry every 6 months, as i have copd, and my reading 3months ago was 67%, the same as it was on the previous test. I found it EXTREMELY difficult to stop smoking, but by far its one of the best things you can achieve.

(PS i LOVE cats too) if thats what your user name suggests. I love cats and sheepdogs, of which i have both.

That would be a very well done for giving up the smoking, yes, not easy but very worthwhile even without the COPD reasons

my first border collie in 1990, lost my last one 13 months ago:( currently mum to 5 burmese babies (not officially babies anymore but try telling them that). There are pics knocking around of some of them on my blogs if you ever get REALLY really bored
