Advice please.

I have mild to moderate COPD and PBC (Primary Biliary Cirrhocis?). The last time my husband and I went abroad I landed up in a clinic in Palma. I experienced one of those sudden infections which I believe are not uncommon for COPD sufferers. My insurance company refuted all claims and we ended up with a bill in the region of £3,500.00 for the clinic and airfare home. My daughter - an experienced nurse - , her husband and myself and my husband have now booked 4/5 days of sunshine in Majorca. Have any of you knowledge of a fair insurance firm? Is there such a thing? This time I will be travelling with my ABs - a well proven cure - plus all my other accompaniements, my daughter being the best!

I appreciate many of you cannot even make it out of the back door and I certainly don't want to upset you. You truly do have my sympathy. You are my inspiration in making the best of a bad job. I wish you all well.

Chris.

Check out the BLF website Wowsa, they have a list of insurers who will give a fair quote.

How long ago was your last trip abroad Chris ? If it was fairly recent (say the last couple of years) you may have trouble obtaining a 'fair' quote.

I was hospitalised in Switzerland a couple of years ago and find that quotes for travel insurance are exhorbitant, most companies quoting me upwards of £1,600 for a 14 day trip to Switzerland. Needless to say, I can't afford to go, despite the airfares only being around the £50 mark !!

Will the e1 11 cover you in Majorca ? I used mine in France last year when I ended up in hospital, all I ended up paying for was lab tests and x ray, the e 111 covered the rest, x

i was in hospital in france and the e11 only covered part of the bill. ihad to pay £500

Whilst the BLF do supply a list of insureres people tend to find the companies on it very expensive. Using an E111 and shopping around may be the best bet. The last time I travelled I used Avanti - can't remember how much exactly but not too pricey or I would not have used them! Good luck.

I use Stay Sure. I went to Gambia in Nov, if we excluded USA Canada,Carribean Thailand it was cheaper. My friend used SAGA. I guess as everybody is different it is worth ringing round. Best of luck. Polly63

Hi Wowsa

Sorry to read of your experiences in Palma.

We have an excellent 'Holiday Pack' which has information on going on holiday when you have a lung condition and information on insurance companies who can insure pepople with pre exisiting medical conditons.

Insurance companies can have different crieria and rules so it really is worth shopping around. If you private message me with your details i will get one sent out today.

Cheers

Jo

Many thanks for all these replies. I used a sort ;of "Compare the Market" site and the best quote I got was about £560. I have now insured with Staysure for £61 for myself and my husband BUT my COPD and PBC and his prostate cancer are excluded. But we'll be OK if we break our legs! As so many of you say, the E11 is a good backup. So long as it gets here in time. When I checked it was out of date. I have, of course, reapplied so - fingers crossed!
